Week of October 19 (Game 1) – Drama Queens broke open a close one-goal game with three unanswered goals in a three minute span early in the third period to run away with a 5 – 2 win over Jake-O-Lanterns. For Drama Queens, they remain undefeated in their last three games. For Jake-O-Lanterns, the confidence building win from their previous game did not carry over to this game.
After a scoreless first period, Jake-O-Lanterns scored the game’s first goal two and a half minutes into the second period on an impressive individual effort by George Medeiros who broke through the defense, had his initial breakaway shot stopped but stayed with it to convert the rebound in tight for an unassisted goal. Three minutes later, Drama Queens tied the game as Joe Carlton was set up by the passing of Shawn Miville and Ray Dow, which was the third goal in three games for Joe. The key momentum swinging goal of this game belonged to Tony Bono who was set up by Cooch in the high slot with two minutes to play in the period. Tony’s timely shot through a partial screen beat the goalie far side.
Two and a half minutes into the third period, Ray made the play of the game as the shots by Shawn and Mike Surette missed the net but ended up on the stick of Ray behind the net who calmly moved out front, improved his shooting angle by moving to his left and beat the goalie. With momentum on their side, Jamie Kehoe scored an unassisted goal from the point two minutes later, which was followed by Shawn finishing off the scoring for his team a minute later, set up by Jamie to break open the game for Drama Queens. With less than two minutes to play, Todd Bryson was set up out front by the passing of Sergio Costa and George to account for the final score.
For Jake-O-Lanterns, the season is on the verge of slipping away from them and missing the playoffs unless they turn things around quickly and buy into the team concept and start running more.
Week of October 19 (Game 2) – In a well-played close game between two evenly matched teams, Shockwave scored two unanswered goals in the second period to hold on and defeat Snow White 3 – 2, in a tight defensive contest. For Shockwave, they remain undefeated in their last four games and moved into sole possession of first place with the victory. For Snow White, after an impressive shutout performance last week, they couldn’t solve goalie Sean Roach.
In and evenly played first period by both teams it was Snow White who scored first. Three minutes into the period, Jason Carrien opened the scoring set up by Shawn Wyatt. For Jason, he continues to impress, scoring a goal in his last four games while leading all defensemen in scoring. Less than two minutes later, Shockwave answered as who else but captain Dominic Defrancisco scored an unassisted goal out front tying this game.
The second period saw Shockwave extend their lead two and a half minutes into the period as Paul Correia scored from the wing, set up by the passing of John Carey and Mike Roberto. Shockwave kept the momentum going as a minute later, Tony aka the Former Portuguese Power Medeiros was set up on the wing on a pass from Jim Clarke and buried his shot giving his team a two goal lead. Snow White was not fazed by the momentum swing as they kept up the fore checking pressure that paid off as Jason scored his second goal of the game with just over two minutes to play in the period.
The third period saw neither team score but Snow White carried the play with a few quality scoring chances. Just like what played out in the second period, there was goalie Sean Roach of Shockwave stopping everything thrown at him and not giving up any rebounds. How dominating was Sean in net? He stopped 12 out of 13 shots faced in the second period and all 13 shots he faced in the third period, as players from Snow White just shook their heads in disbelief that they couldn’t solve Sean.
Stars of the Week
Trash Can Talk
Like Mike Naczas before him.., Head Referee Jon Picard wants out of his Exclusive Referee Contract and wants to return to playing in the Over-30 League.
Jon who feels he’s been held hostage for too long wants to return to playing and have an opportunity to win one of the new championship pullovers.
So Todd Bryson.., here’s an opportunity to make a couple extra bucks to offset your league dues. Design and sell “#FREEpic” T-Shirts to help support Jon’s return to playing.
Mr October or Mr 300.., neither of them compare to “Mr Tenacious” George Medeiros who doesn’t know the meaning of “quit”
No matter what the score “Mr Tenacious” is giving 110% and playing until that 3rd period buzzer tells him the game is over.
The League Director once said “Give me team full of George’s and I’ll show you a championship team”.., plus if it’s a road game you only have to pay for 11-kids meals.
Anyone wearing an orange jersey this season.., should watch and we mean really “watch” the effort George puts out every single time those size 6 sneakers hit the dek.
Speaking of “Mr Tenacious”.., George Medeiros’ first goal of the game was a clear example of George’s never quitting on a play attitude.
While is his defensive zone, George was battling his counterpart centerman Ray Dow for a loose ball.., and it was quite the battle as George got the best of Ray (who felt he was hooked during the battle) before George took the ball from him and went on an offensive attack.
With the ball in hand.., George chipped the ball past Drama Queens Defenseman & Captain Jamie Kehoe and squeezed himself between Jamie and the boards on his way to a clean breakaway on Goaltender Jeff Deharo.
With no defenseman in his was George put the pedal to the medal as “Mr Tenacious” quickly snuck one passed the defenseless goalie.
We asked Jeff if he recalled how George’s snuck passed and he said “I don’t know I was screened”.
Learn the Rules
The webmaster Jim Barber was lambasted in the media for arguing a non-delay of game penalty with chants of “Learn the Rules!!”
Last week one of those chanter’s Mike Naczas was called for a high sticking Penalty and questioned (why?).
Naz made a nice play at the line to jump and bat a fly ball back into the offensive zone.., only problem was when he was jumping to bat the ball, he was holding his stick upright in his other hand resulting in a penalty. You would think an experienced referee would “know all the rules”
Hey Shawn Miville just in case you didn’t know.., the ball has to “cross the goal line” to actually be a goal.., and then you can celebrate.
Otherwise you risk being called for a high stick penalty.
Shawn celebrated one of his shots that hit the post and came back.., and later he celebrated a 5-hole shot that squirted out and went wide.
So remember; Ball crosses the goal line (Celebrate).., Ball doesn’t cross the (No Celebrate).., Raise your stick over your head (Penalty)
Playing in only 1-game out of 5.., Olive Pits Mauro Colucciello made sure to show up on his BYE week to pick up his new championship pullover.
We asked why Mauro couldn’t wait another week and he said “Just in case I don’t make the next game (again).., I wanted to make sure I had something nice to wear on Halloween when I go trick or treating with my Brother John and the kids.”
Since you’re now a “Made Man” Mauro.., and that Championship Pullover goes with any jogging pants to complete that “Italian Suit” look for any goomba event; Italian Thanksgiving Dinner, Italian Christmas Eve, Italian Weddings, Italian Funerals, Italian Festivals.., practically any Italian Family event that you and brother John are attending together.., wear it proudly until John becomes a “Made Man” of his own.
Longer Game Times
Making his “return” to the league and playing in only his 2nd game of the season John Colucciello has returned to the faceoff circle and he brings along those “crab-like” antics and delays.
The good news is if he’s playing the 5:00.., and you’re playing the 6:00.., if your running late, the game probably won’t start on time.
Vice versa, if you’re playing the 6:00 with him.., please allow extra time for any after hockey dinner plans (or Casino visits)
For someone who bitches about traffic on a weekly basis.., Ray Dow showed an incredible amount of patience as he stickhandled out of the corner and to the top of the faceoff circle where he patiently waiting to pick his spot on Goaltender Scotty Rosato.
Ray shot a BB top corner (blocker side) on Scotty to score Drama Queens 3rd Goal and eventual GWG.
Is it still “Challenge” at this point.., and was it ever really a “Challenge” to begin with for Dominic DeFrancisco and his Pink Stick Bag “Challenge”
On pace to shatter it.., does he even need to finish it?
Sorry “Cooch” looks like your wearing that pink warm up shirt for another season.
When You Wish..,
(Sing-a-long)..., When you wish upon a star.., Makes no difference who you are..,
Unless you’re Jason Carrien who keeps wishing for one of those weekly 3-stars and not getting enough votes by the “Star Voters”.., Jay even tried throwing his teammate (who won a star) under the bus to appeal to the secret judges.
So Jay.., keep wishing and one day you might get that star you’re wishing for.
It was a tough week if you were Scotty Rosato and Mike Naczas as both players pulled Double Duty and both players posted losses for their team and the team they were “helping”
