Opening Debate
This week’s debate.., who is the worst forward on a breakaway?
We have three candidates to select from;
- Nick Romano – The slowest of the candidates, Nick came into this season with 388 (regular season) goals has always been notoriously horrible on a breakaway. We would guess that of the 388-goals.., he scored 8-goals on the breakaway, 200-goals using a one-timer and 180-goals using some kind of blind or no angle shot.
- Jim Barber – Slightly faster than Nick, Jim started the season with 189 (regular season) goals and like Nick is equally as horrible when sent in alone.., although we speculate his conversation rate is a little better than Nick (but still awful)
- Nick Doherty – One of the fastest players to play in the Over-30 League he has only 39 (regular seasons) goals in his early career. We don’t know the exact number but we speculate that he’s scored 9 of the 39 on the breakaway.., which sounds OK.., but he’s had more attempts than Nick and Jim combined in their 93-seaons.
Director Advice?
After watching Nick Doherty choke another break away we watched the League Director talking to Nick between periods on the dek in front of the team bench.
First we’re wondering (why?) the League Director even on the dek between periods and (why) is he talking to Nick?
- Was he coaching him on how to slow down and finish when he gets close to the goalie on the breakaway?
- Was he making him the unofficial Captain of Team Mongrel?
- Was he telling him about this new invention called a “Hairbrush”
New Penalty
The Over-30 has a new penalty.., and much like "Suretting" it too is named after a player.
"Nigro-ing" will be called when you blatantly hold a much younger and faster and player than yourself.., and then beg the officials for a penalty.
Ed Nigro just got sick and tired (and old) from chasing one of the fastest (and youngest) players in the league Nick Doherty who is probably half Ed's age. Ed just had a brilliant senior moment to not only get a break from Nick's constant running.., but to excuse himself 15-seconds early from the game.
Ed just clutched Nick in the waning seconds of an impending 5-2 loss and begged officials for a penalty. Brilliant move Ed.., that alone should have won you the AARP Player of the Week.
History Continues
With ReUnited’s first loss and their perfect season ruined… the Over-30 history of “no team going undefeated and winning a championship” will have to wait until another season.
Pop the cork for who’s ever left of the1972 Dolphins… another team chocked.
Bombs Away
Welcome to the Over-30 League Lee Nogler.., you're exactly what the Gold Miner's need right now. Someone who can calmly handle the ball.., set up plays.., and when called upon fire that cannon as the opposing goaltender. We're just not sure if your shot was that deadly accurate (on if fill-in goalie) Jake Deehan just blinked? Because, that's how fast your goal went in (in a blink of an eye).
Adding Steve Witkus and Lee Nogler to the roster just gave their honorary team member Paul Corriea something to finally cheer about.., as his chances of winning a "Letterman" style Championship Jacket just went up.
Four Score…
Speaking of Bombs... “Four score and seven years ago..," was the last time Colleen O'Connell scored a goal in the Over-30 League. Records indicate that it was back in 2015. Ahhhh 2015 you remember how great the world was back then without masks and mandates.
Shortly after Colleen scored her goal the Saugus PD showed up to investigate a bomb threats. If Lee's bomb was scored in a blink of an eye.., then Colleen's was scored while Jake's eyes were completely shut.
In His Sights
With Doug Sedille opting out of his spring season contract… Joe Shannon, who was recently promoted to forward now has Matty Iannello (and his former scoring title) in his sights.
Coming into this season “The Great One” Matty was sitting on 523-goals.., with “The Canteen Man” Joe trailing behind at 510-goals.., a 13-goal differential.
With both players scoring 4-goals so far this season and keeping that 13-goal differential.., there’s a side bet brewing in the league.., will Joe regain his title? If not; what will the final goal differential be at the end of the season?
More details to follow…
