Game Results and Player(s) of the Week

Week of March 6 (Game 1) – In the first “must win” game of the season, the pressure was on Snow White to simply win or be eliminated from playoff contention this season.  Playing some team-wide desperate hockey and pressuring the key offensive threat of their opponent, Snow White jumped out to a three-goal lead and held on to defeat Olive Pits by the score of 4 – 2.  In the process they put an end to their four-game losing streak while keeping their playoff dreams alive.

After a scoreless back and forth first period with no goals scored and the goalies and the defense controlling the play, Snow White broke through with three unanswered goals in the second period.  With five minutes left in the period, Matt Farrell used his first-move speed to break past the defense on the passing of Ray Nickerson and Gary Goodwin to score the game’s first goal.  Three minutes later, Gary found himself alone in the slot and scored on the rebound of shots by Matt and Ray (that’s Mr. Scorer’s Hands and not Stonehands to you).  Less than a minute later saw Nick Romano score from the high slot after the hustle of John Mastrocola and Tony Fosco applied pressure on the defense.  On the ensuing faceoff twenty seconds later, Olive Pits put an end to that Snow White momentum as Rick Cassano took a feed from Dave Parquette and Pat Pirone to get his team back into this game.

In the third period, as Olive Pits carried the play, it was Alex Leone who scored, three minutes into the period, set up by Dave Costa and Rick, making this a one goal game.  However, some costly penalties in the last two minutes prevented any comeback, as Olive Pits killed off a two-minute penalty then a killer too many men on the rink penalty right after that.

Any hope for a tying goal was ended by Ray who scored into an open net with the goalie pulled. Gary Goodwin had perhaps his best game all season as his hustle forced multiple turnovers and his presence around the net was causing havoc all game long.  Also helping was watching Matt look healthy, with his skill level and quickness on full display.

Now all Snow White can do is watch the scores come in heading into their bye week and hope for some help from Drama Queens against Shockwave.

Week of March 6 (Game 2) – With a chance to still control their own destiny and clinch that final playoff spot, all Shockwave needed to do was win.  However, missing two of their top forwards and short-handed on defense, plus the quick strike ability of their opponent Jake-O-Lanterns, proved too much as Jake-O-Lanterns routed Shockwave by a

5 – 2 score.  The win extended Jake-O-Lanterns unbeaten streak to four games and moving them into sole possession of second place in the standings.

Speed kills and in the first period, it was all Gino Tammaro who factored into both goals his team scored.  Two minutes into the period saw Angelo Deluca benefit from the speed and passing of Gino and George Medeiros for the game’s first goal.  That was followed by more speed as Gino took a pass from Steve Medeiros to separate from the defense and beat the goalie cleanly.

In the second period, Jake-O-Lanterns didn’t let up as their speed and fore-check was causing trouble with the defense that led to two more goals scored.  A minute and a half in, Matty Iannello scored a typical Matty goal (not stealing another team mates’ goal) off the passing of Todd Byson and Angelo.  Three minutes later on a power play saw Steve Silveira jump up into the offense by the passing of Matty and Nick Doherty for a commanding four goal lead.  Two minutes later stunned by this offensive outburst, Shockwave’s Rich Pelletier extended his scoring streak with his 4th goal in his last three games off the passing of Dominic Defrancisco and Jim Clarke.

However, any thoughts of a dramatic comeback were quickly extinguished two minutes into the third period as Nick was set up by Steve Silveira and Steve Medeiros.  With just over a minute to play, Dave Wilson was set up by Dan Broderick and Derrick Power to cap off the scoring.

30th Year Commitment

That sounds like most of our marriages in another 10-years (or less).., however this commitment is going to be a little more exciting

Players that are planning on returning for the "30th Anniversary" Season this fall.., you need to commit to the draft by Sunday April 11th

Please visit the new webpage "30th Anniversary Form" or click the link below

30th Anniversay Form

Commit ASAP… or risk being on the waiting list for 2021-2022 Seasons.

In The News

Matty Iannello and the Over-30 League appeared this week on Mylec’s news feed.

We’ve already congratulated “The Great One” internally… but here’s some external press of Matty’s accomplishment.

https://mylec.com/2021/03/11/over-30-hockey-league-matty-iannello-508th-goal/

Rosters Locked

This is it… play with what you have from here on out.  Rosters are locked for the remainder of the season.  The only real race is for the final spot in the playoffs.

This week Snow White has the BYE and they will be cheering (from home of course) for the Drama Queens to continue the dominance over the league (with the exception of Olive Pits).

If Shockwave can beat the Drama Queens this week.., they will advance to the 4th seed.

Since John Kelleher is a Captain he has special clearance to attend this week’s games… John we suggest you start practicing your cheering;

“Bricker-Bracker, Firecracker, Sis, Boom, Bah..,”

“Drama Queens, Drama Queens..,”

“Rah, Rah, Rah…”

Another Horse?

Don’t look now… but coming around the 4th turn and heading towards the finish line.., there’s another horse in the race for the scoring title.

With just (3) weeks to go here’s your leaders going into this week:

Dave Parquette 22-points (away this week and next) – 1 game left to play

Nick Doherty 21-points (our pick to win it) – 2 games left to play

Ray Dow 19-points (also away this week) – 2 games left to play

Matty Iannello 19-points (17-Time Scoring Leader) – 2 games left to play

Matty’s no stranger to last minute comebacks… With Dave missing 2 out of his last 3 games to tournaments… This is when “The Great One” does what does best and steals scoring titles away.

Triumphant Return?

Ed Nigro and Dave Costa made their triumphant return to action last week and it was just in time to let Snow White live another week in the playoff race.

Snow White’s Gary Goodwin was so excited to see Dave return to action last week that he welcomed Dave back with a two handed chop that went uncalled.  Rumor has it that Dave is back on the IR again this week.

Down Not Out

John Kelleher and company are not going down without a fight.  Last week with their playoffs backs to the wall they came to play..., going up 3-0 with a minute left in the 2nd   period … which is a big difference then being down 4-0 in the 1st period as they’ve done so many times this season.

Matt Farrell looked a lot healthier and in playoff form (should they hang on long enough the get in) and Ray “The Boss” Nickerson did what he does best… set up assists, as he was once the “All-time Assist Leader” (before you know who).., and with 6-seconds left in the game, Ray added his signature empty-net goal during a massive Olive Pits meltdown.

Dumb Penalty

We don’t know how many more times we can repeat ourselves before some of the players get it… but if you don’t have an “A” or a “C” then there is a strict “Zip it or Sit it” policy in place throughout the league.

Last week.., (for reasons unknown).., Pat Pirone was chasing down the ball in the offensive zone and again… (again we don’t know why).., but he slashed Snow White’s defenseman and just like so many of Pat’s “Offensive Zone Penalties” there was absolutely no reason to.

That penalty and Pat’s questioning the Referee call… earned him 2-minutes in the penalty box that single-handedly killed Olive Pits momentum as they had to now focus on 2-minutes of penalty killing instead of tying the game.

Boot Camp

Rumor has it that Olive Pits are sending their League Leading “Offensive Zone Penalty” getter and “Chief Referee Complainer” Pat Pirone to boot camp to learn some respect for the Referee’s

Pat needs to learn how to “Zip it”… so he doesn’t have to “Sit it”.

Maybe this 18-seconds will help him figure out how to interact with people in charge…

2-Man Advantage

After successfully killing off 2-minutes… Olive Pits had just 55-seconds to figure a way to try and tie the game… but then another Pat Pirone “Senior Moment” happed (again the offensive zone)

Instead of exiting the penalty box and coming right to the bench there was chaos brewing as Olive Pits were in the midst of pulling their goalie Dave Giusti for an extra attacker… problem is he was pulled for (2) extra attackers.

Less than 10-seconds out of the box, Pat Pirone was sent back in for “Too Many Men” as Olive Pits tried using the sneak attack method of 7-on-5.

Pat had to return to the box and try to figure out what happened?

No Pat you “shouldn’t have taken a left turn at Albuquerque” and into the offensive zone… you should have kept going straight.., to the bench.

Forgive and Forget

Tony Medeiros was genuinely embarrassed about his recent interaction with Referee Ric Aylwin that earned him a 1-game suspension.

But these two veterans of the league understand that moments become heated and it’s nothing personally as we witnessed during their greeting last week (pre-game)

What Cops are to Robbers… Referees are to Players.., you can’t have one without the other.  So it’s only fitting to “Forgive and Forget” because at the end of the day we’re all here for the same reason… the love of playing (and refereeing) street hockey.

As part of Tony Medeiros plea bargain with the courts.., he was ordered to serve 1-period as a guest referee to get a first-hand experience of what it’s like “dropping the ball” for faceoffs… instead of shooting them off a faceoff.

Tony walked a mile in Ric’s shoes as a guest referee.., and from what we heard about his performance Tony could actually Referee.  After Tony’s court mandated 1-period sentence he was seen filling out an application for future fill-in rolls in Billy needs an emergency fill-in.

Another first in the league; Ric Aylwin was the first referee to get a “paid vacation period” as he got to sit and watch the first period and still collected his full check.

One and Done!

Shockwave was anything but “powerful” or “electrifying” without Tony “Portuguese Power” Medeiros in the lineup last week.  In fact it took them half the game before they woke up from being down 4-0.

With Snow White sitting home… waiting for a text from their Captain about the results of the Shockwave vs Drama Queens game… what’s the message he’s going to be texting his team;

Good News… We’re still alive in the playoff race

Or..

You can book an afternoon tee-time on April 3rd

One win… (that’s it)… is this the week, and remember you have the BYE next week.
