2018 Hockeytown Summer Recap

Before we dive into the first edition of the Over-30 2018 Winter Season forum.., we want to take this moment to recognize (and highlight) a few 2018 Summer accomplishments.., and to congratulate some of our Over-30 players in the process.

Congratulations to Hockeytown Winter D1 Champions Dave Costa and Ray Nickerson from the Misfists.

We also want to congratulate Scotty Rosato, John Kelleher, Joe Gustitus, Nick Romano and Jim Barber from the D2 champions the Bricklayers

MISI League Champions

The first inaugural season of the "Matty Iannello Summer Invitational"  aka the MISI League was launched with great success.

The league was created and launched by Matty Iannello, Jon Picard, Dave Costa along with help from Gary Goodwin, Jim Barber and Jay Carrien to keep Over-30 players in playing shape throughout the summer.

Congratulations to Azores Express and Captain Dave Costa

Hockeytown Triple Crown

If you go to Chinese Restaurant and look at the paper placemat.., you will learn that 2018 is the year of the Costa.

2018 is the year that Dave Costa has become the first player in Over-30 History to win the new Hockeytown "Triple Crown".., Three Consecutive Hockeytown League Championships;

Kentucky Derby

2018 Over-30 Hockey League Spring Championship

Winning Team

Blues Brothers

Belmont Stakes

2017-2018 Hockeytown D1 Winter Championship

Winning Team

Misfists

Preakness Stakes

2018 MISI League Championship

Winning Team

Azores Express

Dave now has his sights on the "Four Horseman of the Apocalypse".    For Dave to accomplish this.., he needs to win the 2018 Summer Hockeytown Championship as that's his 4th Consecutive Hockeytown season and 4th straight bid for another consecutive championship

Good luck Dave!!

Trash Can Talk
2018-2019 Breakups

These up and coming seasons are going to be filled with heartache, sorrow and complaints as this is finally the season of the breakups.

Divorced - It seems Matty Iannello has finally served Ray Nickerson divorce papers sighting "Irreconcilable Differences"… Ray will get to keep the house(s) and money, but Matty wants another Chinese Food Buffet

Family Matters - John Colucciello and Mauro Colucciello along with cousin Niko Vramis have found themselves in family court arguing in front of a judge as to who will be the most productive player without the others holding them back.

Smoked - Cheech & Chong finally went "Up in smoke" after all.., as Steve "Cheech" Iacoviello and Walter "Chong" Maslak have fired their agent and are now taking their acts on the road (solo).

Whacked - Under FBI surveillance.., The Portuguese Crime family of Dominic "The Dominator" DeFrancisco, Tony "Portuguese Power" Medeiros and their kingpin John "The Codfather" Leite had to whack the trio up to cover more territory.

John will continue to oversee the family day-to-day operations but has awarded Cambridge and everything inside the 128 belt to Dominic, while Tony will handle Billerica and everything outside of the 128 belt.

The trio will share joint custody of the Over-30 championship trophy until December 2018 when all three have a solid 20% chance of re-hoisting the trophy (alone) without the others.

Hiatus - Although not officially part of the Portuguese Crime Family.., the Portuguese Odd Couple of Sergio "Oscar" Costa & George "Felix" Medeiros are going on hiatus.

George is distancing himself from Sergio after last year's blatant disrespect of the league issued jersey that led to Sergio becoming the poster boy for the league's new anti-tailoring jersey policy.

See Sergio get a new jersey

See Sergio cut the sleeves off

See Sergio embarrass his Captain

See League Director Mad

See Sergio Sad...

Why the name?

Another opening season is upon us and that time of the year when the captains get their team color and roster.

Some captains try and get creative with the name.., some captains have little imagination and some captains just don't care.  But inevitably a team name has to be submitted and we take this time to try and decipher "Why the name?"

First up.., the "Great One" himself Captain Matty Iannello and his RED Team called; "Mixed Nuts"

Typically Matty puts a little thought into his names that have been in the past heavily influenced by TV & Movies and his daughters.

We couldn't really figure this one out as there is really only one nut on the team in Mauro Coluciello.   He could have called the team "Loose Screws" because there are definitely a few of them on the team.

But it all came down to a simple plane ride back from California when a stewardess ask Matty if he'd like some "Mixed Nuts"

Next up.., 2018 Spring Season Champion and still a semi-newbie Captain Dominic DeFrancisco also put little effort into his name when he choose "Gang Green" for his GREEN Team.

With Dominic being separated from Tony "Portuguese Power" Medeiros and John "The Codfather" Leite.., it was suggested he go with "Portuguese Powerless" as Dom is the only Portuguese player on the team and Tony is without his binky this season.

But Dom chose a team name that is associated with a disease that ultimately leads to amputation.

"Rhino's"???.., John Kelleher is going to have to explain that choice for his BLUE Team.., it sounds more like the name of a secret gay bar rather than an Over-30 Hockey Team.

However we speculate it's either in reference to the Republican Party, or John was about to fire up the grill and saw this;

The winningest Captain in League History, Jim Barber is always the most creative while taking into consideration his players and his BLACK Team color.

"Black Hole" has several meanings on the team.., it could be in regards to Matt Farrell lack of playoff appearance last season.., or the holes on Defense with Bob Synder and Mike Naczas.., or with Jeff Deharo dressed in Black this season.., it might be his new 2018 nickname.

Last up.., and clearly one of the worst team naming Captain ever; Dan "Old Man" Broderick.

Dan may have his name and number flying in the Dek Hockey Hall of Fame.., but it's not for his creativity in naming teams.., being the first ever “SAND" colored team, we would have opted for "Sands of Time" or "Death Valley" or "Life's a Beach"

But nothing creative from the legend as we put Dan's "Sand" color name of "Coach's Corner" in the Over-30 Hall of Name Shame.

Screwed or Not Screwed?

Everyone August when the teams start to get leaked out by the captains.., it's that time of the year when a fair number of Over-30 Players feel like they got "Screwed" of if you Ray Nickerson (you got "FU&#ED" by Billy - Again!!).

Now it's time to review which teams are actually "Screwed" or "Not Screwed"

Mixed Nuts.., this team it's all going to come down to Sean Roach.   If Sean has a great season then this team will be fine and will easily make the playoffs.

Ron "The Flying Hawaiian" Aquino had a great productive summer in the MISI League.., and Dave Costa is having a "Can't Lose in 2018" type of year.

Plus Matty Iannello has had a weight lifted of his shoulders and transferred to Dominic DeFrancisco.

Mixed Nuts: "Not Screwed"

Gang Green.., this is a going to be a tough season for Captain Dominic DeFrancisco.

He's own his own without the Portuguese Brotherhood and he has a few players that are prone to either having a really good season or a just plain awful season (and they know who they are).

For Gang Green to make the playoffs they are going to have to gel as a team and all of them collectively have to have a good season, otherwise it will be an early Christmas break for them.  Until we see a few wins and team chemistry...

Gang Green: "Screwed”

There's a herd of Rhino's gearing up for a new season.., and I'm making the prediction early.., look for them to top the standings this season.

Goalie Scotty Rosato has been playing great all summer.., plus any time your #1 Draft Pick is Shawn Miville your team will be ok.

Little George Medeiros is coming off the MISI League as the first runner up in the MVP voting and earning a new nickname for the Over-30 League.., look for George "The Mosquito" Medeiros to be flying all off the dek this fall and buzzing around causing havoc.., because George is probably one of the most tenacious players that will come ready to play this season.

The only question we have is will Shawn Miville continue his weekly team spirit award.., and what will it be?

Rhino's: "Not Screwed"

Much like the contestants on Master Chef.., Black Hole Captain Jim Barber has been given a "Mystery Box Challenge" whereas he's giving a mixed box of ransom ingredients and needs to come up with a recipe for success.

Early predictions for the front office expect Matt Farrell to be in the running for the League Leader.., but it's going to take a total team effort to win enough games and not be eliminated from the playoffs.

Jim's challenge is going to be to keep the personalities and any negativity on the team in check.., and somehow figure out how to pull a rabbit out of a hat.

Pre-Season Injury reports also have Rick Cassano on the 6-week DL.., so we are concluding that;

Black Hole: "Screwed”

Anytime you have a Dek Hockey Legend and Hall of Fame Inductee as your Captain.., you’re going to be playing for someone who can teach you how to win and also recount how and why you lost..., Coach's Corner Captain Dan Broderick is that guy.

Dan has been dealt many challenging teams over the last few seasons.., and can recall each and every season as to why they lost and didn't make the playoffs.., but this season isn't going to be one of them.

We fully expect Coach's Corner to make the playoffs as there is a lot of hidden and under the radar talent that will quietly and collectively help them make the playoffs.

However; the one BIG variable and unknown that could affect the team (positively or negatively) is the health and play of Goaltender David Guisti.   Yet to play a whole season.., Dave needs to have the same start he did 2-seasons ago when he went on a shutout tear.., but even with that variable;

Coach's Corner: "Not Screwed"

2018 Winter Season Predictions

Forget the Mayan's.., Throw out those haunted Ouija Boards.., get rid of that old deck of Tarot Cards.., and if there's a Magic 8 Ball in your closet that guided your youth with random answers to random questions..., Shake it one last time and ask it if "You're Gay" and then thrown that out too.

None of those discarded items are needed to predict the 2018 Winter Season results.

The Over-30 League has retained the services of someone who is going to predict the future of the upcoming 2018 Winter Season.

Please take a moment to review your teams fate and if there's an award in your future as we introduce to you; NAZtradamus.
