The quiet man, one of the Over-30 league’s most gentlemanly and adaptable players who can easily play center, wing or defense if called upon by his team. One of the Over-30 league’s most outstanding shut-down defensive players, Tony can neutralize even the best scorers in the league with his tight checking style and solid positioning all over the rink. Wearing his favorite number 1, Tony’s 1st priority is to help his team win by playing solid team defense, but, he can also turn up the offense when needed. Tony was one of the first players we challenged to make himself a better player in the Over-30 league by trying some new moves and developing his offensive skills. The result was a successful transformation.
Playing now in his 33rd season, Tony has quietly gone about his business, building a successful career in the Over-30 league, winning 7 championships along the way and moving up to 19th place overall in the all-time career scoring stats. All this from a guy we found playing and recruited as a walk-on in the Hockeytown co-ed league back in the late 90’s. After scoring and dominating against the women hockey players, we knew that Tony would adapt and do very well in the more competitive Over-30 league. Based on his career results, we sure were right!
Rumors & Facts:
- Was born “Sonny” Bono but legally changed his name to “Tony” after learning he could not properly grow a mustache.
- In recent years starting wearing his white trademark helmet because his wife gave him an ultimatum to either “wear the helmet” or “not play”.., so he sang “I got you babe” and donned his new cap.
- With his speed Tony remains one of the leagues better fore-checkers.
- Lives in the same neighborhood at the great Matty Iannello… and people have witnessed Matty teaching Tony how to play center, take draws.., and unsuccessfully tried to teach him “The Move”.., Matty’s signature breakaway move.
- Achieved “Superstar” status…, while playing in the “Co-ed” league.
- Always wears the #1 to remind him of how many goals he’ll score that season.
- The second recipient of the “Smiling Pete Lodi Pink Stick Bag Challenge” as he needs to score 9-points total to avoid being the next pink stick bag carrier.
