Game Results and Player(s) of the Week

Week of December 5 (Game 1) – Players showed up expecting to see a hockey game and instead participated in a classic goalie battle.  Goalies Scott Rosato of Snow White and Jake Deehan of Jake-O-Lanterns stole the show and spotlight!  Matching save for save, Scott’s performance in the third period was the difference as Snow White held on to defeat Jake-O-Lanterns by the score of 2 – 1.

In the first period, it was Jake-O-Lanterns who set the tempo as only two minutes into the game, Cappy scored from the point, set up by Gino Tammaro and Matty Iannello.  Jake-O-Lanterns defense pushed the play and carried most of the territorial edge and shots generated.

In the second period, Snow White made a push and started controlling the center area of the rink, with quick transitions that generated shots.  This effort paid off with a big momentum turning goal scored by rookie Pedro Fontes in close off the fore checking of fill-in Tony Fosco with only twelve seconds left in the period.

Only two minutes into the third period, Snow White kept the pressure on with another quick strike sequence around the net that saw players swarm the net and Tony converting a rebound off the passing of Pedro and a heads up play by Shawn Mulcahy keeping the ball in at the right point then jumping into the offense.

The third period was the highlight of this game as the play was back and forth and wide open with both teams generating prime scoring chances.  Both goalies stepped up and prevented any goals being scored, with Scott stopping a few breakaways and a few set plays right off the faceoffs, while Jake stayed focused through a flurry of in close shots and rebounds.  Basically, Scott stole this game for his team.

Week of December 5 (Game 2) – Coming into this game, two things were apparent.  One, rookie goalie Jake Brum is the real deal in net and has been lights out in his debut so far.  Two, Olive Pits needed a win badly to get back on track.  Both teams earned points from this game, but it was Olive Pits that emerged on top with a come from behind 3 – 2 overtime win over Drama Queens.

The first period was all Drama Queens as they swarmed all over Olive Pits and controlled the game and tempo, outshooting their opponent by a two-to-one ratio.  If not for the play of goalie Dave Guisti, Olive Pits could have found themselves in an early hole.  We were seeing another classic goalie battle brewing.

Drama Queens broke open this game in the second period, scoring twice.  Five minutes into the period saw Joe Carlton stay hot by scoring his fourth goal in three games, set up by the hustle of Ray Dow and Jamie Kehoe.  With just over a minute to play in the period, Cooch making his debut after months on inactive status, hustled his way to the front and put back his own rebound to score an unassisted goal.  How dominant was Drama Queens to this point in the game?  Their shot total in the second period (14) equaled the combined two period shot total of Olive Pits.

Needing something to get them back in this game and change the momentum, Olive Pits got it from an unexpected source as Pat Pirone put back an in close rebound of a Ron Aquino shot three minutes into the third period.  With two minutes to play, Drama Queens made a mental mistake that cost them as they were called with two many men.  On the ensuing faceoff and power play, Jim Barber crashed the net and put back a rebound of shots by Mauro Colucciello and Mike Luise only nine seconds into the power play with two minutes left.

In overtime, Elder Lopes (who played every second of this game on defense) won it from the top of the left circle on a rocket of a slapshot, set up perfectly by Pat.  This win may just have kick started the defending champ’s season!

Trash Can Talk

COVID-19 List

With COVID -19 numbers spiking again players are showing up on the league new COVID-19 list.

Like other major sports teams players on the COVID-19 list have violated their team’s COVID-19 protocol and will not be allowed to play for their team that week.  They will remain on their respective rosters and will not be placed on waivers.

Two players appeared on the list last week.  We are not publicly announcing player names due to the 1996 HIPPA Act.., so like the Governor of Massachusetts says; just assume if someone is not playing that week they have the Corona.., so Mask-Up on the draws.

StateFarm Jake’s

Despite Jake Deehan and Jake Brum’s back-to-back losses they remain back-to-back leaders in the leading goalie race.

Jake Deehan played a lot better during his 2-1 loss and Jake Brum proved he’s not a machine he actually can be beaten.., although it might take a little OT to “get ‘er done”.

Is the Jake and Jake show just a short-lived anomaly to this early season.., or could this be a battle to prove who is the better “Jake from StateFarm” between the pipes.., just like in reality when the old white Jake (with khakis) got replaced by the new black Jake.

Indefinite IR

Showing up on the league’s indefinite IR report is Snow White’s Jason Carrien who’s rumored to be out until 2021 with a lower body injury.

When asked about losing his top defenseman, Captain John Kelleher said “the bench area is a lot quieter without Jay I can actually hear myself think and strategize a game plan”

Then we asked rookie Pedro Fontes for his comments about being down a defenseman and he said; “Who’s Jay again.., is he the tall lanky loud dude or the little stalky fella who thinks he’s LeBron James with his pre-game headphones.., I didn’t see either of them last week?”

New Head-to-Head

Jon Picard walked through the door for Matty Iannello and the rest of the Jake-O-Lanterns and so far he’s 1-1-1 with 1-Goal, 1-Assist and 10-Shots (debatable).., which ties him for points with Colleen O’Connell in the Head-to-Head race.

It was an easier match-up for Colleen when she went Head-to-Head against the “assist begger” himself Mike Naczas.

With Jay Carrien out for Snow White.., Colleen is sure to get more playing minutes and chances to earn more points in her impossible match-up.

Moving on Up

Jon Picard who replaced aging defenseman Mike Naczas after negotiations for a contract extension went sour.., rumors are already swirling that instead of strengthening the defense as the move was intended to do... Jon (just 3-games in) is sniffing around the offense zone as he was spotted at center taking draws while Matty moved over to the right wing.

If Matty does exercise his executive powers and moves Jon up front with him.., then Jake Deehan could have a civil suit against the league for a “bait and switch scam” perpetrated by high ranking league officials.

Seconds Matter

Forget Jon Picard’s playing ability (or lack of this early season).., we want to know more about his TimeKeeping resume?

A graduate of the “Bill Abcunas Time Clock Guesstimating”.., Pic wants to ensure the league that (like his mentor Bill) he “holds the clock” after he shaves off an undetermined amount of seconds after a whistle.

When Ray Dow needs to yell “Wake Up!!” for your clock mismanagement.., then you know you’re screwing up.

#SecondsMatter

Head Start

When you’re already one of the fastest guys in the league.., you don’t need to get a head start on an offensive rush.

Speedy right winger Gino Tammaro has now become infamous for his offside calls.., and his Captain Matty Iannello was seen giving him an earful after Gino negated a potential 3-on-2 when he jumped early… and it wasn’t his first offense.

Fellow Pisano Rick Cassano submitted some footage of him and Gino racing on the streets of East Boston and you can clearly see that Gino was jumping the gun back then.

Historic First

There’s another first in the Over-30 League. All-time League Leader Matty Iannello has never lost to a guy named Pedro.

That is up until last week when the Week #4 Five Guys (Co-winner) Pedro Fontes had a goal and an assist to figure in 100% of his teams scoring during the 2-1 win over “The Great One?”

Matty has lost to several Pedro’s on the soccer field but never on the hockey dek.., so congrats Pedro you made Over-30 League History.

POP Two!

Hey 1972 Miami Dolphins.., Pop two bottles of Champagne, one for the Pittsburgh Steeler and a second one for the Drama Queens as their perfect season is no more.

Drama Queens lost in OT to the two-time defending champs Olive Pits.., the same team that beat them in last season’s championship finals

If someone is going to bring an end to the start of a perfect season it’s only fitting that Jim Barber and company brought them back to reality.

Don’t get us wrong.., the Drama Queens are the real deal this season with their (addition by subtraction) and their permanent massive and tough to beat goalie Jake Brum who went from a .5 GAA to a still very impressive 1.33 GAA after his OT loss.

The biggest compliment that Captain Jamie Kehoe gave in regards to his goalie letting up 3-goals.., “There’s something nice about having a goalie that doesn’t blame the defense and/or the team for the loss”

Dynamic Duo

Dave Costa and Elder Lopes might as well be wearing masks and a cape when they play defense for Olive Pits.

This Portuguese Dynamic Duo is easily the best defensive pairing in the league and after playing all 30-minutes to a 5-5 tie.., They somehow found the strength through their chourico and linguica inspired meals to go and extra 3:14 seconds in OT to ensure they got their first win of the season.

Personal Win

For the second straight week Donny “Speedy” Maccini exposed another high profile defenseman and this one is a former MVD and MVP.

Sorry to have to write this but Dave Costa got turned inside-out by “Speedy-Maccini” going down the right side boards again.

Although he didn’t score.., anytime Donny beats a marquee player like Dave it’s a personal win for him.

Easy-E

No we’re not talking about NWA’s Eric “Easy-E” Wright we’re talking about our own new “Easy-E” player as Elder “Easy-E” Lopes who after playing the entire game still had enough gas in the tank to make scoring on Jake Brum in OT look easy.

However like Eric “Easy-E” Wright who was snubbed in the Grammy Awards for their 1989 Album “Straight Outta Compton”.., Elder got snubbed for the top spot on the POW Awards.

Sure.., Scotty Rosato made some key saves and beat a team that hasn’t made the playoff in 2-seasons. Sure he shut down offensive attacks by Matty Iannello and Jon Picard... but “Easy-E” Lopes played all 33-minutes and 14-seconds to not only help earn his team’s first win of the season but get the GWG in OT (by a defenseman)

Easily the biggest snub of the season by the judges.., thankfully our “Easy-E” Lopes is not a gangster otherwise there might have been a drive by happening in North Reading.
