Week of February 18 (Game 1) – Both teams showed up expecting to play a hockey game; instead they found themselves involved smack dab in the middle of a good ole fashioned shootout. At one point they even were ready to break out the shooter tutors, there were so many goals scored in this game. How many? Try 13 total goals! In the end, it was the team with the last scoring opportunity that prevailed as the Pylons outlasted 11 Guys, 1 Ball by the staggering score of 7 – 6.
In the first period, only four minutes into this game, you could tell that something was happening here as the Pylons jumped out to a quick three goal lead. Shawn Miville, Steve Witkus and Nick Romano each scored forcing 11 Guys, 1 Ball to call a desperately needed time out. The move paid off as John Mastrocola scored a minute later. Undaunted, with just over a minute left in the period, John Kelleher (still dealing with a lower body injury) answered for the Pylons. With thirty seconds to play in the period, Tony Medeiros countered for 11 Guys, 1 Ball.
After seeing six goals scored in the first period, the abundance of goals continued in the second period with another five goals scored. The Pylons looked like they would be turning this game into a rout when Shawn scored his second goal, and Tony Mastrocola also scored only two minutes into the period. Before you could say blowout, 11 Guys, 1 Ball turned this game around with their team hustle as they swarmed the offensive zone, scoring three goals in under five minutes to make this a one goal game. Tony scored his second goal, followed by Ray Dow, then Dominic Defrancisco. Game on!!
Three minutes into the third period, saw 11 Guys, 1 Ball complete its stunning comeback, as John Leite took a pass from Dominic to tie this game. However, in overtime, John Kelleher won the game for his team (more like surviving this game) after a shot block/pass by Mike Naczas to Anthony Lauletta sprung John down the left wing who beat the goalie from long distance for the victory. The win moved the Pylons into sole possession of second place in the standings.
Week of February 18 (Game 2) – For two periods, Shark Attack played with desperation and was in control of their destiny until a fluky goal late in the game broke a tie game and saw Yellow Submarine emerge with a hard fought
6 – 3 win. Captain Matty Iannello led by example big time, factoring in on every goal his team scored (2-4-6).
In the first period, Yellow Submarine, playing short-handed, took advantage of a three-on-two breakout and the defense of Shark Attack collapsing on their goalie that saw a wide open Matty Iannello score from high out with only fourteen seconds to play in the period.
Knowing they needed to step up their fore check and attacking game saw Shark Attack take advantage on the power play as Mauro Colucciello was set up on the wing by Mark Stickney and John Colucciello less than two minutes into the period. Two minutes later, Bill Abcunas set up a pinching Jason Carrien to spring open a breaking Jim Clarke who found an open Mauro, giving Shark Attack the lead. However, with just over a minute to play in the period, Matty took advantage of a defensive turnover on the right wing, patiently held the ball past the sprawled out defenseman near the net to find a wide open Umberto Biancardi for an easy open net goal.
As the third period played out, both teams had scoring chances and the game looked like it was heading to overtime, when with four minutes to play, rookie Bob Snyder threw a wrist shot on net from long distance that somehow eluded the goalie, catching him by surprise. Taking advantage of the momentum swing saw Matty score off another defensive turnover two minutes later. After Mike Luise scored making this a one goal, before Shark Attack could pull its goalie with just over a minute to play, Brian Kehoe sealed the game by scoring two goals.
