Over 30 Hockey League

Week of September 11 (Game 1) – History was made on September 11, 2021 as the Over-30 league celebrated its 30^th anniversary season with its opening game between Last Call and the Gold Miners.  In a tied game after two periods, Last Call scored three unanswered goals in the third period to pull out a 5 – 2 win over Gold Miners.

Gino Tammaro became a trivia answer when he scored the first goal of the historic 30^th anniversary season when he scored only thirty seconds into this game.  Gino added a second goal in the same period.  Chris Ducharme scored 2-goals in the third period to break this game open, while adding an assist.  

Rookie Garvin Chan assisted on the tying goal earlier, then proceeded to score the game winner halfway through the third period.  Mike Luise factored in both of his team’s goals with 1-goal and 1-assist, while Tony Medeiros had 2-assists.

Week of September 11 (Game 3) – Loose Cannons started off their season quick with a dominating first period performance, scoring four straight goals and never let up taking control in routing ReUnited by a 5 – 1 score.

Dave Parquette led the way on offense scoring 2-goals to break this game open.  Nick Doherty used his breakaway speed in scoring 1-goal and adding 1-assist.  

Captain John Kelleher started off his quest to beat that Pink Shirt Stick Bag Challenge by scoring his first of seven goals needed, while adding an assist.  Tony Bono also got in on the offense by scoring 1-goal and 1-assist.  

For ReUnited, who never recovered as a team after the first period, Ray Nickerson scored their only goal to break up the shutout bid.

Chaotic Start

Like every new season the first week can get a little chaotic.  Then you mix in the fact that no matter how hard you prepare.., there’s always going to be some hiccups.

The league would like thank Mike Naczas for bringing up the Gatorade cooler (on-time) but with more ice than the Iceberg the Titanic hit.

Thanks to Jim Barber for showing up late with the Player Waiver Forms and the 30^th Anniversary Commemorative Booklets.

We can’t forget Ray Dow for picking up the 4-cases of Gatorade (despite being warm) at least they all weren’t one flavor.

Most of all Thank you Kellie for being on-time and helping get everything setup.

All-in-all… it was a successful opening day and there were plenty of “Wow’s” to be heard.., which was our goal since the planning began back in April.., and there’s still more “Wow’s” to come.

Paparazzi

We want to thank Mike Surette for his opening day roll as league Paparazzi.  Despite having a horrible assistant, Mike’s effort was appreciated in capturing most of the league’s player photos.

If you haven’t had your picture taken with Mike… please do so.

The Over-30 league would also like to thank Todd Bryson who designed the new red carpet step & repeat backdrop that will be used all season long for the weekly awards photos. 

All award winners will have the weekly award photographed with their award and make sure you’re wearing your team jersey.  Mike Naczas will also be handing out the weekly awards and taking those individual photos as well.

So remember to wear your jersey and smile for the camera.

Honored Guests

The last round of “Thank You’s” is for our former players who took the time out of their busy lives to come be part of opening day celebration.

These players are all retired from the sport… but it’s still nice to have the comradery and bond that we share from the sport and the leagues 29-year history.

Players were excited to see their former teammates and friends and despite what Rick Pitino said… “if you expect them to walk through that door, they’re going to be gray and old.”  It was really nice seeing Bill Mack, Scott Young, Carlos Pereira, Joe Shannon, Dave Hill and Mike Hollingsworth step back onto the rink.

We will be doing this all season long for the next two seasons… so you never know who’s the next “Gray & Old” guy to walk through that door.

Breaking 65

Manny Nunez must have skipped right to page 24 of the Over-30 Commemorative Booklet and read Joe Shannon’s quote about “Meeting the person who breaks that record of 35-goals and 65-points in a season” as last week Manny was trying to score all 65-points on week #1 against Sean Roach.

Just remember Manny… the season is a Marathon and not a sprint so don’t peak to early.., and don’t be afraid to dump a couple of balls in the corners at the end of a blowout game.., there is no vaccine for “Picardi-itis”

Vote For Jay

Jason Carrien was seen badgering players to sign his candidacy paperwork to become President for the OHLPA (Over-30 Hockey League Players' Association).

Jason’s platform was simple:

• More weekly Stars
• More weekly Awards
• A beer in every hand
• Lower league dues

Two of Jason’s demands are already in progress with 9-weekly stars and now 5-weekly awards with the new “Statler & Waldoff” (Play of the week) and the “Mortimer & Randolph” (Gaffe of the week).

However.., league officials want to remind Jason to not get too greedy or you might find out first hand where the former teamsters union President Jimmy Hoffa is really buried.

Circa 1930

Dave Costa and OHLPA candidate Jason Carrien took to the streets to raise awareness about the leagues new prohibition laws.

Just remember:  Keep the racks and beers hidden.., don’t be walking around like it’s a nightclub and the only cooler allowed is the Gatorade cooler.

Be Prepared

The Boy Scouts preach it “Be Prepared”.., but it just goes to show you that no matter how much you think you prepared for something.., you’re never fully prepared.

Months and months of planning and the biggest screw up comes on Week #1 as it was revealed that the jersey colors for Omerta and Loose Cannons were switched at birth.

The original logos for the 30^th Anniversary Commemorative Booklets were the correct logos.  However somewhere between Salem and India the colors were switched (after the booklets were printed).  We revised the team logo colors on the website, but you can see what it was supposed to be in the booklet.

$60 Mistake

Sorry Jake Deehan.., the league will reimburse you the $60 for the screw up.

What screw up you ask?

Jake had his helmet wrapped in his new red and blue loose cannons logo.., only to learn on opening day of the jersey screw up and he was now green and black.

Can't wait to see the 1st Over-30 team logo on a goalies mask.
