33-Seasons and counting...

Article 527 - October 19, 2024

Sir Walter Scott

Nicknamed “The Great Unknown,” Scott secretly published his wildly successful “Waverley” novels and, in so doing, helped forge the genre of historical fiction.

He maintained anonymity for years, keeping his work a secret even from his own children.

Truth... Lies... Facts... and Over-30 Fiction

Lead Story

Being a journalist, there’s a saying in the newsroom… “If it bleeds, it leads!”

Last week after posting 1-goal and 4-assists to factor in all 5-goals, Matty Iannello was sent home “bleeding”, after “leading” his team to a 5-0 victory.

We’ll have more on the cause of the bleeding later…

Honoring Legends

Come celebrate one of the originals…, this week at 5:30PM we honor the 9th inductee Billy Mack into the Over-30 Hall of Fame.

Along with Billy being formally inducted, we have a couple of league legends who will receive a special Hall of Fame Award as well.

Jokers & Bruins

We have another “Jokers Wild” raffle for the month of October…, so please see Tony, Naz or Billy for your $10 card.  Once we sell out…, we start flipping for a couple of $200 winners.

We also have the annual Bruins raffle…, this season we have a pre-Christmas game up for grabs.  Bruins vs Washington Capitals on Monday, December 23 at 7:00 pm.

Price: $20 (6-Tickets) - $10 (3-Tickets) – or $5 (1-Ticket)

M*A*S*H

If you grew up watching M*A*S*H in the 70’s & early 80’s you knew it stood for “Mobile Army Surgical Hospital” …, but we have a new acronym based on their 0-6 record along with their dismal 8-goals, and with Steve Silveira (a defenseman!!) is leading the team in scoring.  We hear your cries for scoring help and we’re sending some capable scorers your way.

We called Uncle Sam and asked him to reinstate the draft and as a result (2) players will be making their way to the front line.  Jon Brown who is on the waiting list and has filled in on occasion will now be a permanent “fill-in” while Paul White is on IR for an undisclosed injury.

We also have a surprise returning veteran coming back for his 5th season in the league.  This player, who will remain nameless until his debut is more than capable of scoring, but more importantly will add “hustle” …, (and) he has been to the big dance twice (and lost), but he got there (which is more important) for this story.

So we will now use the acronym “Motivated Additional Scoring Help” …, and for you (Captain Jamie Kehoe), remember these two quotes: “You can lead a horse to water, but you cant make them drink”…, and more importantly this famous hockey quote:

“Leadership is not about being liked; it's about being respected” ~ Mark Messier

So, take your thirsty (for a win) horses down to the river and let them sip from the stream of victory…, Or just take them to the glue factory.

Goalie Archives

Last week we brought it to AJ Larabee’s attention for some of the goalie awards he can strive for this season.  We also noted that Sean Roach holds the 15-game season record for GAA with 2.73.

It should be noted that out of the 51-rostered goalies since season one, back in 1992…, there has only been (13) full 15-game seasons played by only (9) goalies…, and (3) of them are current goalies.

Week #6 (10-12-24)
Week # 6 Saturday, October 12
4:30 PM Barney & Friends 2  Dominions 4
5:30 PM Phoenix Rising 5  Azores Express 0
6:30 PM M*A*S*H* 1  Hammertime 4

4:30 - Barney & Friends vs. Dominions
#2 Star Angleo De Luca
#3 Star Derek Donegan

Paisano vs Paisano

Ricky Cassano will say he’s just happy with the Dominions win…, but Barney & Friends Captain Angelo Deluca will tell you that it was him and Gino Tammaro who had to carry Ricky all these years.

Despite the 4-2 loss, Angelo showed his former Paisano linemate “Who’s the Don” (Angelo) and who’s the “Underboss” (Gino) and who was just a lonely “Street Soldier” posing as a “Capo” wannabe.

With Mike “Doo-gan” Duggan in prison for a week… “Don” Angelo had to step up and be a leader scoring both of his teams’ goals last week during their third straight loss.  The real question is what will his new underboss “Doo-gan” do to impress “The Don” when he returns after a week in the clink?

Safety First

With a bunch of players out last week…, the league did some internal recruiting by sending help to the front lines.  But we must ask John Kelleher what were you thinking when the league asked you to fill in for the Dominions and to wear a “yellow” shirt?

We know you wear a “Red” shirt in football to denote “No-contact” …, but what message were you sending with the safety yellow shirt?  “Senior Fill-in” – approach with caution?

Slip Slide and Away

This week we’re quoting Paul Simons 1977 release;

“Slip slidin' away
You know the nearer your destination
The more you're slip slidin' away”

Those words couldn’t have been any more appropriate for Dominions Eric Fortin.

Despite his 1-assist on the scoring sheet last week…, Eric was all over the rink.  He just didn’t have his scoring touch working.

In fact, at one point, Eric was flying out of his own defensive zone, through a couple of defenders and as he was getting “nearer to his destination” – the offensive zone…, when Eric just “slip slidin' and was away… on his ass”, through his own doing as there wasn’t another person around to blame.

Another Move?

It’s good to see that readership of the Forum is up… and like a good Seinfeld quote, players can quote from the forum (well kind of).

If you recall (three weeks ago) Article 524 talked about the “Move” move…, the “Punk” move and the new “Douche” move…. and Leo Trombley was half right in his quote of Tony Medeiros’ ENG last week.

Up 3-2 with Barney & Friends goalie sitting on the bench for an extra attacker…, Tony took the opportunity and scored an ENG with 44-seconds left to play.  Perfectly legal within the “Non-Punk” move criteria, but Leo thought it was a “Douchebag” move (or something like that) as he tried to quote the forum before the ball dropped after Tony’s goal.

Now if this was years ago…, sure, we go along with your assessment of Tony (and his goal), but sorry Leo we can’t let the leagues new “Director of Fundraising and Special Events” be called a “Douchebag” …. Like they say in Toronto “That’s a good goal!”

5:30 - Phoenix Rising vs. Azores Express
#1 Star Matty Iannello
#2 Star Garvin Chan
#3 Star Nick Romano

Breakaways

It was good to see Garvin Chan doing what he does best…, and that’s use his speed to create offensive opportunities.  Garvin is doing exactly what this reporter said he has to do…, and that is to turn Matty Iannello’s passing, into points for “The Great One”.

Last week Matty sent Garvin in for a breakaway on Scotty Rosato (who can easily stop Mike Duggan) but couldn’t stop Garvin as he buried his 3rd goal of the season.

Garvin would have another breakaway opportunity, but it was apparently waived off by what he thought was an icing or offside call.  ~ More on that later.

Undercover Spy

With 4-players out for Phoenix Rising…, Angelo “Kato” Deluca was tapped to fill-in and help their offense as he scored his team’s only two goals.  There was just one slight problem… “Kato” was doing his best effort to thwart their league leading 5th win of the season by stinking it up.

It wasn’t until Assistant Captain Matty Iannello caught on and called out Angelo’s antics.

Thankfully Angelo covered his tracks by scoring the 4th and meaningless goal and even celebrated in their 5-0 win for Phoenix Rising.

Year of the …

For the 2024 Chinese New Year it’s the “Year of the Wood Dragon” …, but for Phoenix Rising it’s the “Year of the Chin”.

As we reported last week, Eddie Chin had 1-more goal than Matty Iannello did.

After reading about his lack of scoring goals this season, “The Great One” buried the first goal of the game to tie Eddie with 3-goals…, but that would last all of 17-minutes and 41-seconds when “The Chin” man buried his 4th goal of the season to retake the lead.

No Substitutions

Eddie Chin came into this season with 11-points and a championship from his rookie season with the Sandbaggers.  Now Eddie has already surpassed his previous rookie season best (6-points) with his 7th point on the season, thanks to help from Matty Iannello and Garvin Chan who both assisted on his 4th goal.

Eddie is on pace to surpass his previous (2-seasons) total of 11-points…, in just a single season while on his way to a potential lucite award in December…, as he is having a career season so far with 4-goals and 3-assists.

With Mike O’Neill out of the lineup last week and “The Chin” man being promoted up to the top line with Garvin and Matty…, we asked Eddie for a comment on Mike’s pending return to the top line…, and all he said was “Sorry No Substitutions”

Offside or Icing?

Remember when we said we’d get back to Garvin Chan and his second breakaway of the night?

After burying his first breakaway… Garvin was off to the races again on his second and as he closed in on Scotty Rosato (again), Garvin just tossed the ball into the corner, and we were left confused.   Did he feel bad for Scotty and his pink warm-up jersey?

Reports say that Garvin saw fill-in Referee Tony Medeiros with his hand up to call offsides or icing (or was raising his hand to ask a question) …, so Garvin just whacked the ball into the corner (but no whistle followed) and thus no second breakaway goal for Garvin.

So, you know what that means Tony…, Garvin gets a free Jokers Card or single Bruins Raffle ticket courtesy of the Over-30 Promotions Department…, or you owe him (1) free penalty shot next time you referee a Phoenix Rising game.

Assasination Attempt

Since returning from open heart surgery, Matty Iannello has had more assassination attempts than former president Donald Trump.

Matty has been, “whacked, hacked and attacked”…, leading him to ponder why he returned to the sport that made him the self-proclaimed street hockey version of “The Great One”.

Now to this week’s conspiracy theory.

Mike “Doo-gan” Duggan who is the current defending 3x League Leading Scorer (and chasing his 4th) is 7-points behind Matty with his league leading 16-points after only 6-games.

For you mathematic enthusiasts that’s a 40-point pace for Matty…, which he’s only done 6-times in his previous 54-seasons…, with his personal best being 44-points (15-goals, 29-assists) back in Season 6 (Winter 1996) with Slow Rollers.

Now “Doo-gan” out for a mandatory 1-game timeout, and his Captain Angelo De Luca filling in for Matty’s team…, here’s where the inside job conspiracy theory comes in.

Late in the 3rd after notching his 5th point of the game… a shot rang out, Matty hit the floor and then quickly exited the game a bloody mess…, leaving his defenseman Jason Carrien to clean up “the blood of The Great One”…, which reminded us of another bloody failed assassination attempt.

Matty was left sitting on a bench, pressing a bloody towel to his nose, and contemplating his future in the Over-30 League…, when someone was heard yelling “Fight!.., Fight!!.., Fight!!!” to Matty, probably in reference to him continuing his campaign to beat Mike this season for the scoring title.

6:30 - M*A*S*H vs. Hammertime
#1 Star Elder Lopes
#2 Star Lee Nogler
#3 Star Doug Sedille

Fill-in Goalies

Last week’s bout between M*A*S*H vs Hammertime had both teams using a high caliber fill-in goalie.  Dave Giusti needed a week off from losing and Dale McIsaac watched from his team’s bench with an undisclosed lower body injury.

As we told you last week AJ Larabee would be filling in for Dave, and Steve Taddonio was filling in for Dale.  We also predicted that AJ would either help M*A*S*H get their first win of the season…, or they would be the ones to drag him down and give AJ that losing feeling.

Well like all 50/50 coin-flip predictions… it was the latter as AJ’s 4-1 loss (gave him that loser feeling) but without going on his permanent record…, as he remains undefeated (so far) this season.

Meanwhile Steve Taddonio lived up to his nickname “Mr. Perfect” for 23-minutes until Tommy Gallagher ruined his potential fill-in shutout.

No Center

With Rob Sheridan on IR…, Johnathan Caffarella AWOL…, and Patrick Spencer claiming he was not fit to center last week.  Hammertime had to “center by committee” with wingers Jim Barber and Lee Nogler taking on the toughest position in the sport.

Jim was absolutely useless in the faceoff circle as M*A*S*H centerman Tommy Gallagher repeatedly embarrassed Jim on every draw.

Not only did Tommy make Jim look silly on the draws…, but he also twisted him around and embarrassed him in front of Hecklers Row as Tommy buried the one lonely goal (and a sweet one at that) to ruin Steve Taddonio’s shutout as a returning fill-in goalie.

New Tito’s Award

We have a new Over-30 Award…, Last week Timmy “Tito” Burke handed out the first of probably several “Tito’s - Whiff of the Week” awards to himself.

Timmy had several point-blank chances to bury some much-needed goals for the M*A*S*H forwards, but “Tito’s” new “Whiff & Seltzer Mix” had the onlookers in Hecklers Row going nuts.

But before you think you can win yourself a “Tito’s - Whiff of the Week” award, (think again).

This award will only be given out (and received by) “Tito” himself.  So, Timmy…, looks like you need to keep the “whiffs” to a minimum (especially in front of Hecklers Row).

Top Corner

With Steve Silveira out of the lineup for M*A*S*H it was time for veteran leadership to step up and continue the defenseman scoring touch.

With ALD Mike Naczas needing 5-goals to cash a “paper napkin check” his mouth wrote over the summer…, he’s been advised by top scoring defenseman to just “SHOOT!!”

With just seconds left to play in their 4-1 loss…, “Naz” finally used Ray Dow’s favorite expression with “F’ em!!” and ripped a shot that was heading for the top corner…, and right as it was about to hit the can of peas sitting on the top shelf…, his former goalie Steve flashed some leather and dashed his dreams of a first goal of the season.

Which reminded us of this commercial and meme

Owner Suite Guest

It was nice to see Paul Correia make an appearance at Hockeytown last week.  Paul was seen being escorted down to the owner’s suite to watch last week’s games.

Product Endorsement

The Over-30 League doesn’t promote or generate revenue from any endorsement deals…, but what we can do is offer a little advice to those players who have experienced hamstring pulls or calf muscle strains.

This week we have two products to debate.  Cream vs. Compression.

Several players are pushing a miracle cream designed for horses…, but for those players who don’t want to rub equestrian lube on themselves and risk a second-degree burn, we offer another solution.

Equi-Block DT Formula (Daily Treatment) is the second stage of our three-part Pain Reduction Program. Equi-Block DT was specifically designed to treat long term chronic pain in a more cost-effective manner. It works wonders on horses suffering from debilitating diseases as well as pain stemming from old injuries.

P-TEX PRO Compression sleeves…, these are not just any fabric sleeve, you must purchase the “PRO” version with the green lining inside and put them on an hour before the game to begin the heat retention process.

Kinetic paneling integrates the benefits of kinesiology tape to provide stability and support
Thermal compression provides heat retention that promotes more efficient muscle movement.

Which ever product or method you choose…, the Over-30 League assumes no liability for misuse, misguidance or misinformation.  Use and play at your own risk.

Dear Casey Kasem

Two weeks ago, you played a video dedicated to #77 and his return to the Over-30 League.

The subliminal message to viewers via Avenge Sevenfold was that we all need to “Hail to the King” as he returned to the top of the leader board.

The very next week he dipped in the standings to #3 even though he was tied for the top spot with 11-points…, he sank to #3 because of his lack of scoring goals.

Now back on the top spot alone after his 5-point performance last week…, players in the league are gunning for him after another failed assassination attempt.

So once again…, we ask that you send another message to the league that you just can’t “Kill the King”

Thanks,

For anonymous reasons just call me “Captain Successful”

I’m Casey Kasem and here’s a dedication from the anonymous “Captain Successful”…, to those players plotting and trying to dethrone “The Great One” in his quest to stop Mike Duggan at (3) consecutive scoring tiles…  Just remember;

"Kill the King, The King is dead, Long live the King,
I am the King," God save the King"
