2025 Spring Season Forum
Official Newsletter of the Old-Time Hockey Over-30 League

33-Seasons and counting...

Article 538 - February 1, 2025

Truth... Lies... Facts... and Over-30 Fiction

On the Docket

The next Over-30 Hall of Famer is on the docket.  Join us February 15th as we induct the other half of the “Twin Towers” of defense, Mike Hollingsworth.

Mike, who has a defensive award named after him, will now join his other half Bill Mack in the Hall of Fame.  Mike will be the 11th inductee to the hall.

Hall of Fame Update: Tommy has to work on the docks, unions been on strike, its tough (so tough).

Because of the union strike and the vast amount of formatting and other projects, we must delay the unveiling of the HOF.  Slated to be unveiled in January, we are now targeting the end of February.  There has been a lot of progress made, but those pages will remain hidden until we are ready to share it with the players.

February Giveback

This month we are giving back to one lucky player a $250 shopping spree through our partnership with Mylec President Rick Laperriere and the Mylec Corporation.

The winner will be given the option to visit Mylec in Winchendon MA and pick out whatever you like (up to $250.00) Sticks, Gloves, Shin Pads…, and also take a tour of the Mylec Facility.  Rick is a really nice guy, and he typically throws in some Mylec swag as a bonus.

If you don’t want to take the tour, you can still use the Over-30 credit up to $250 and we’ll make arrangements to have it picked up for you.  Winner to be drawn next week (February 8th).

Scoring Challenge

It’s that time of the year again…. After the first 1/3 of the season we will add the Spring Scoring Challenge to the website, so you can measure your probability for being eligible to be entered into the drawing.  More details to follow next week.

5-minute Clarification

For two weeks in a row now we have seen a player get a game misconduct (and get tossed) … and for the second week in a row we had the same debate on the rink about a player serving the penalty.

So, let’s clear it up once and for all… now pay attention!

Different leagues have different rules… Over-30 vs MISI vs NBHL vs Hockeytown… and this one is ours;

If you get a 5-minute “Misconduct” penalty for slamming your stick, tomahawking it or any other offense that earns you 5-minutes in the box… (You!) are going to serve the 5-minutes (plus a whistle) as teams will continue to play 5-on-5 during your penalty.

If you get 5-minutes and get tossed out of the game, no one will serve the 5-minutes as play is not affected on the rink… teams will continue to play 5-on-5 during your ejection.  How can you penalize an innocent player for 5-minutes (plus a whistle) to sit in the penalty box for something a teammate did?

However, if you get a 1-minute penalty, and then turn that into a game misconduct by arguing, debating, tossing a stick… and, (you) get ejected on top of the initial penalty… (then yes!), a player will need to serve your initial 1-minute penalty (but not the game misconduct).  The penalized team will play shorthanded for 1-minute.

4:30 - M*A*S*H vs. Phoenix Rising
#1 Star Steve Silveira
#2 Star Tom Gallagher
#3 Star Jamie Kehoe

No Superstars

After their back-to-back wins, including an overtime win for the soaring Phoenix Rising, it was a crushing defeat to the winless M*A*S*H.

Phoenix Rising was without their biggest superstars as Matty Iannello who is off on a two-week cruise… and meanwhile Jason Carrien, Mike O’Neill, and AJ Larrabee were all MIA (so to speak) in the 5-1 thumping they received last week.

So, we are now left wondering after seeing Jason post zippo on the scoring sheet… is he still putting Chris Torres “on notice”… and with Mike (an NBHL Tier #1 player) with just one measly assist…, is he still “coming for records”… and does AJ need another “sabbatical” to goalie rehab to get back on track after that 5-1 loss to the last place team.

Grunts & Brownbaggers

If for nothing else…  The Forum not only writes itself each week, but it’s also a great motivational tool.

After M*A*S*H’s 0-3 start we said… “Remember you’ve been here before…, you know how to turn it around.”

Whelp, that only took one week to get into the win column, and mostly thanks to the “Grunts” and “Brownbaggers” on the team who stepped up and helped get their first win of the season.

Todd Bryson gets the GWG and John Mastrocola purchased the insurance goal from AJ Larabee…, as both were set up by their Captain Jamie Kehoe.

But Tommy Gallagher gets the slowest “Punk Move” in the Joe Shannon “Punk Move” era, when he stole the ball and went into the offensive zone all alone at the pace of an OJ Simpson “Low Speed” chase.  Tommy buried the 5th goal of the game after being up 4-0 with only 15-seconds to play.

The only saving grace for Tommy not being a “Douche Move” is that there was no working clock, so he had no reference of time or score… he’s a smart veteran to know to never look a gifted horse in the mouth and take the easy goal and points when you can.

“Mastrocola-ing”

John Mastrocola are you looking for the Over-30 Board Members to create a rule in the off-season meetings and then name it after you?

I mean there are already “John’s” in the police sting operations… but “Mastrocola-ing” could be called when you assault and knock over one of our senior players.

How dare you knock over a living legend, an icon, a national street hockey treasure… you’re lucky you only got a 1-minute penalty.  Several on-lookers were calling for an ejection after they witnessed Dan Broderick lying on the floor.

Seeing Dan on the floor is like seeing an accident with a car on its roof… it’s not something you see every day… so you slow down to get a good look at it and hope everyone is ok.

Besides you were up 3-goals…, and you’re knocking over the “most senior” player in the league, what’s next, are you going to check Colleen O’Connell in the corner when you’re up by 4-goals?

Got Your Number

Tommy Two Tone must have had a premonition when he wrote (Jenny) or in this case “Jimmy - ” they got your number”

The Dominions sure do have Hammertime’s number with “8-6-7-5-3-0-9”

8- The total number of goals that Hammertime scored in 5-losses.

6- The number of goals the Dominions scored to knock them out of the playoffs.

7- The most goals the Dominions put up in a single game against them.

5- The number of Dominions wins (and) Hammertime losses

3- The most goals Hammertime can score in any single game

0- The number of goals Hammertime scored in their last two meetings

9- The number of goals Dominions scored in their last two meetings.

This was their first meeting with Rob in the lineup and it didn’t make a difference as Hammertime “Ran”, but they didn’t “Run”…, they “Fought”, but they didn’t “Fight”… as they couldn’t match the intensity that the Dominions had from the opening faceoff.

There are two more games for them to try and break their reign of “Dom-ination” by the Dominions and their goalie Sean Roach.

“Rob-bed”

With Rob Sheridan on the comeback tour… the “RPM” meter took a dip last week as Rob only managed to get two shots on goal.  He did set up some beautiful passes, but his own teammates “Robbed” him of any of those potential assists on the scoring sheet.

Sorry Rob, but this week the RPM needle dipped to 3.5 with the shutout and only two shots.

Return to Sender

Chris Torres got a “notice” in the mail that stated he was “on notice”…, He quickly called his defensive partner and retired mailman Shawn Mulcahy to ask what to do with the “unofficial” notification and Shawn simply told him to take it and just “Return to Sender”.

With a federal official giving him sound advice…. That’s exactly what Chris did with his 3-assist performance, (and once again) besting Jason Carrien on the defensive leaderboard.

#2 Star Gino Tammaro
#3 Star Jake Deehan

Next Train Stop

All Aboard…. Looks like Azores Express Conductor and Captain Dave Costa is still riding the success train… as the next train station stop was “1st Place” in the standings.

Dave is showing signs of his former self as a #1 defenseman and 2017 MVD winner, when he picked the top corner to tie the game 1-1.

Also remember; the MVD Award is not necessarily about stats, just ask Paul Firicano.  If Dave can take his team from last season when they had a battle for the #6 seed, to a disappointing loss in the finals… and now on his way to a 1st place contender… we could be chanting “M-V-D!!” once again.

Double Ding-a-lings

Hey Gary Goodwin…, you owe Ron “Flyin’ Hawaiian” Aquino one of your shifts… poor Ron had to serve your penalty after you got yourself tossed early to go finish celebrating the Dominions and Azores Express “not perfect” seasons.

Meanwhile Gino Tamarro was rung up for shooting a ball on a net after the whistle…. Looks like Gino wants to lead the league in Points, Goals, Offsides Calls, and now “Shots on goal after the whistle”.

OT Hero

Who would have ever thought that an older veteran would be the overtime hero in our NHL 3-on-3 format.

The new overtime format (which everyone seems to love) was designed to declare a winner with only 6-players and two goalies on the floor… but it’s built for some speedy youth or a superstar to win the game in OT.  Just don’t tell that to Alex Leone.

Dave Costa started the overtime…, but moments after he made the change for Alex, that’s when Alex went to work and made a beautiful play on the ball to take it behind Scotty Rosato’s net and circled out front looking to make a pass.  With limited passing lanes, Alex pulled a Mike Duggan and just picked the top corner for the win and #1 Star.

Ironically the win comes from two defenseman and two top corner goals.

Minions Check

Just for full transparency and disclosure to the players on Hammertime.

Before your 3-0 loss to Dominions for the 5th straight time… someone on the team paid the league dues with a Minions check.

Now we can’t disclose names or amounts, but we can say he’s a rookie and could be part of the reason you are not beating the Dominions as his allegiance may be elsewhere.

All Fixed?

It appears that the scoreboard and timeclocks are fully functional and back up to Hockeytown’s lower standards for dek hockey.

The new facility owner and Paul Powers did a walkthrough as Paul explained his plans to fix the constantly nagging electrical shortages… and he’s probably part of the reason the clock went down in the first place with his minimal electrical knowledge.

With the clock fixed and allegedly fully functioning we will not have to listen to Tony Medeiros screaming at players or Mike Naczas screaming into the megaphone (which kind of defeats the purpose of the megaphone).

The good news is Billy was contemplating spending league money to get a new one…, but Paul got to the root cause of the scoreboard screwup and was as simple as 1998 hit song by the band Kix…
