2025 Spring Season Forum
Official Newsletter of the Old-Time Hockey Over-30 League

33-Seasons and counting...

Article 545 - March 22, 2025

Truth... Lies... Facts... and Over-30 Fiction

Congratulations to Ray Dow and Todd Bryson for winning the final "Season of Giving Back" monthly awards with a pair of Bruins tickets each.

Money Talks

If you are committed to playing in the 2025 Players Jamboree on May 3rd & 4th please try and see Billy today with your Jamboree money as we all know “Money Talks”

Please pay the $80 to solidify your interest in playing… or if your tight on cash $40 will get it done.

We need both playing and financial commitments to allow us to proceed towards a draft and ordering the shirts for the event … which is now 6-weeks away and a ton of prep work still needs to occur between now and the first faceoff.

Just in case you need a little reminder … Here’s some AC/DC for you;

Them the Rules!

The League Director, Head Referee and the leagues Policy Writer have all been busy (Dotting the “I’s” and crossing the “T’s”) with regards to rolling out some of the leagues official “Rules & Policies” for the website.

You asked for it, so here it is … We are breaking it down into (3) parts “Conduct - Game Play – Policies” so that we don’t have a word salad overload on a single webpage.

“Conduct” will address penalties and misconducts … “Game Play” are unique (or tweaked) rules geared towards the Over-30 League and the facilities … “Policies” are where we will convey our special policies regarding the league.

All of these can be found under the new “Rules & Policies” tab on the homepage.  This is not a complete body of work as we expect changes and updates.  When changes, modifications or additions are made to these pages, all players will be notified of the updates.

Registration Due

If you see a player wearing a team jersey but watching from the other side of the rink and not sitting with their team on the bench… it’s because they haven’t paid their balance due yet.  This is the week (no pay – no play) is in effect, so make sure you take a page from the Three Wisemen and bring Billy some Gold, Frankincense or Myrrh… and if he doesn’t take that try Cash or a Check.

Voting Complete

The 2024-2025 Mylec Player of the Year voting is complete with 58-players casting their votes.

Special thanks to Mike Naczas who pounded the campaign trail “stumping for votes”.  Also thank you to Jim Barber for creating the ballots based on the captain’s nominees.

Lastly, thanks to the captains who had the tough task of nominating just (2) players from their team to be on the ballot.  There are often more than two players that are worthy, but the leagues policy mandates that only (2) per team be nominated.

So, the “2024-2025 Mylec Player of the Year” is …

You’ll have to wait until the envelope is unsealed on April 5th.

Pop Up

We wanted to let you know that next week March 29th the Over-30 League will be hosting another “Pop-up” event to give back to the players and those loyal fans in “Chicklet’s Corner”.

Once again Donny Maccini has donated racks of ribs to the “Over-30 Pitmaster” Dave Giusti to work his magic on.  The league is also providing some sides courtesy of the Board of Directors.

Here’s a preview of what you can expect from Dave’s secret rib rub recipe.

Week # 12 Saturday, March 15 2025
4:30 PM Azores Express 5  Hammertime 2
5:30 PM Dominions 1  M*A*S*H 3
6:30 PM Phoenix Rising 4  (OT) Barney & Friends 3

4:30 Azores Express vs. Hammertime
#1 Star George Medeiros
#2 Star Cappy
#3 Star Patrick Spencer

Basement Dwellers

George Medeiros is a giant killer… as we learned last month during their second matchup when “Lil” George overtook a stumbling giant in Lee Nogler for the game-winning overtime goal with just 10-seconds left to play.

For his encore performance, George single-handedly helped Hammertime get comfortable in the basement with their second consecutive loss and official cold ranking in the standings.  With just 9-points and only 3-games left, George’s hatred for Hammertime could have just secured a rough road in the playoffs for them, as Hammertime is almost guaranteed to be the 2025 Spring Season “Basement Dwellers” for the playoffs.

Lesson from Mrs.

Despite all his criticism of him wearing a fishbowl and impairing his hockey mojo… Patrick Spencer is proving that he can play, be productive and protect his freshly married face all at the same time.

We thought it was an order from Mrs. Spencer (pre-wedding) but they eloped back in January and he’s still wearing it … and having a career year with 14-goals and 9-assist in his four short seasons in the league.

Pat’s two goals last week were the only highlights for Hammertime … and probably a direct result of Mrs. Spencer being on the rink pre-game ripping shots and showing her husband how to score.

Forum Predictions

We also say the Forum “writes itself” … we called out George Medeiros about his measly 6-point season and the very same day he goes crazy.  Then we explain to Azores Express that you need to score goals to win (and not bitch) and that’s what they do with a 5-2 win.

The I-Team30 Investigators revealed that when Azores Express scores… they win!  But, when they score 2-goals or less, they lose … thanks to basic math and Jake Deehan’s 3.22 GAA.

So, what does captain Dave Costa do after last week’s 5-2 loss to M*A*S*H … he calls Jake and tells him that Hockeytown has another carbon monoxide leak and don’t bother making the hour trip up from the Southshore.  Then tells the League Director he needs a goalie … and *poof* “Mr Perfect” Steve Taddonio steps in and keeps it to 2-goals for the win.

5:30 Dominions vs. M*A*S*H
#1 Star Tom Gallagher
#2 Star Todd Bryson
#3 Star Jon Brown

Shortest Stick

It was a chance meeting in a Chelmsford Hannaford Supermarket that got Tommy Gallagher interested in returning to the Over-30 League.  Now two seasons into his return, Tommy is proving to be a vocal leader and making an impression for a future “C” prospect.

Tommy who uses a stick from the “Scotty Young Collection” … which is just slightly larger than a woman’s field hockey stick (3-feet), is the smallest stick used in the league.  But, as they say it’s not the size of your pencil, it’s how you write your name … and having a 3-foot stick allows Tommy to have a nice “signature” with his quick draws on the faceoffs … as he is now one of the leagues toughest centerman in the circle to win a draw against.

Thanks to Tommy’s field hockey stick … he scored the GWG last week to beat the #1 team and also had an ENG (which was not a punk move) to ice the game for M*A*S*H.  Now for the rest of you reading this… go grab a yardstick and you’ll see what it’s like holding one of Tommy’s sticks.

Not so “Great One”

The not so “Great One” wearing #99 Pat Pirone was the Dominions lone goal scorer last week during their 3-1 loss.  When Pat is your lone scorer and he stayed out of the penalty box … your team is in trouble.

Typically, Pat would be in the offensive zone taking “offensive zone” penalties … or trying his patented “wrap around” move from behind the net … or digging at the goalie after the whistle.

After spending weeks in the Florida sun, thankfully Pat’s return to action was the sole reason his team wasn’t shutout last week.

Losses Decoded

We took a look and investigated the Dominions losses on the season and found an interesting couple of facts.  Of the (5) losses… All five have been to the other (5) teams.  No one has beaten them twice this season.

Second fact and this is a game changer … We discovered that (3) of the (5) losses occurred when both Manny Nunes (their 2nd leading scorer) and Chris Torres (their #1 defensive scorer) are both out of the lineup … The Dominion’s lose!

So, when you play the Dominions and you look over at them warming up, and notice that both Manny and Chris are both out, there is a 60% chance that they will lose that game.  That 60% is enough for Lee Nogler to bet the money line on Draft Kings … and will probably win!

6:30 Phoenix Rising vs. vs. Barney & Friends
#1 Star Ike
#2 Star Scott Rosato
#3 Star AJ Larabee

“Unsung Hero”

The biggest story of the 6:30 game has to be the way it ended and who ended it.

Steve “Ike” Iacoviello once a Hockeytown pariah is now one of the nicest defensemen in the league … not like Dan Broderick nice … but considering his former reputation, he’s done a 180.

With the game on the line and no goals on the season, confidence and predictions from “Hecklers Row” egged “Ike” to step up and score the game winner for his team.  Call it divine intervention or the fact that his mother has attended 11-games this season and has yet to see her baby score … Steve was last weeks “Unsung Hero” and here’s how.

Barney & Friends young gun Mike Duggan had a chance to be the games hero when he broke in on goaltender AJ Larabee with Matty Iannello neck and neck with him as he was the lone defender between a tie and a loss.

Matty who calculated the odds of AJ stopping Mike quickly used his hockey IQ to somehow cause “Doo-gan” to fall over his own two feet before getting a shot off.  While Mike was still looking around for a referee with his arm up… or a yellow flag tossed near him… “Ike” took the ball the other way, deked a defenseman and went in one-on-one vs Scotty Rosato.

Steve used a move he taught the kids on his Warriors Tournament Team, it’s called “Backhand, Forehand, Fall Down, Roof it” for the GWG.

It’s also nice to see Momma Iacoviello checking in on her son to make sure he’s eating right;

Lost Confidence

Matty Iannello’s “Great Departure” from the league has been a little disappointing.  With only 3-goals in 9-games… The “Great One” has lost clout with the oddsmakers and bettors of the league.

After scoring the first goal of the game last week … Matty quickly let those know who lost confidence in his ability to score (never mind the 1st goal of the game) with an Italian salute to the spectators in Hecklers Row.

His talking points are transitioning from Matty “is” the greatest player to Matty “was” the greatest player before this season even ends.  He’s no longer keeping up with “The Joneses” … in fact, he’s also not keeping up with the DeFrancisco’s, the Tammaro’s, the Spencer’s, the Sheridan’s, the Nunes’, the Pelletier’s, the Duggan’s, the Chan’s, the Trombley’s or the Nogler’s… as “Matty-I” is not even in the top 10 on the leaderboard.

Return to Action

Phoenix Rising #1 Defenseman Jason Carrien returned to action last week… just in time to be 4-games, 1-goal and 11-assists behind the defenseman leader Chris Torres.

Let this be a lesson to you Jay… Don’t write a check your thumb can’t cash... "You son of a Bah-bah-bah..."

Un-Honorable Discharge

Looks like Timmy “Tito” Burke or as his M*A*S*H teammates like to call him “Klinger” won’t get his discharge from the league after all.

“Klinger”, sorry we mean “Tito” has once again stepped up and offered to sponsor the 2025 Players Jamboree through Tito’s Vodka.  With Timmy preparing for transitions surgery, he will not be available on the draft board … but the Over-30 League would like to extend a “Special OPS” role and will ask him to be available as a special guest judge for the “Tito’s - Player of the Game” award winners that weekend.

Timmy could have a role in deciding if your playing was worthy enough to drink Tito's Handmade Vodka, made by Fifth Generation, founded by Tito Beveridge in 1997 in Austin, Texas – specializing in vodka made from yellow corn, rather than potatoes or wheat. It is distilled six times and unaged.
