33-Seasons and counting...

Article 546 - March 29, 2025

Truth... Lies... Facts... and Over-30 Fiction

Pay Up

The Over-30 Jamboree is trending upwards to the desired (6) teams and (48) players.  If you haven’t paid the $80 cover charge to get in… please do so this week.

What’s the old saying in sports “Defense wins Championships?” … or … “You have to score to win!”  Either way… here are the (6) “Offense and Defense” captains for the “2025 Player’s Jamboree”

Offense: Angelo De Luca, Mike Duggan and Dominic DeFrancisco

Defense: Jason Carrien, Dave Costa and Tony Medeiros

Anyone want to wager on which captain will win?  Better yet, if all (6) captains bring a $10 bill to the Jamboree Draft… we can have a little side monetary award to compliment your bragging rights, and it will only cost you $20 to play in the jamboree ($30 if you lose).

Last Chance

After giving the players in the league a head start, the “2025 Golf Day” is also filling up quickly… There are (8) teams from the Over-30 League and (5) confirmed by Paul Correia’s family and friends.

Those remaining spots will go quickly now that the league exclusivity is over.  For those players who have committed…, please submit your payments to Tony Medeiros.  It’s important that we get those who have committed to financially secure their team’s spot on the course.  Otherwise, Tony will fill it, as we don’t want to wait until the last minute to collect.

$150 Single Player (will make a foursome with singles)

$600 Team (4-players)

$400 Sponsor

This event is a spring highlight with lots of raffles, prizes and sponsorships that will make the event a memorable one.  All proceeds will go towards the Paul Correia Fund and the Over-30 League’s “Give back to the players” campaign.

If you want to pay with Venmo… please include your name and team name so Tony can mark you as paid.  Otherwise, Tony takes cash as well… either way to pay!

Team Baskets

Last year Jim Barber worked with the (6) captains to raise money for the individual “Team Baskets” that are used to sell raffle tickets for the “Golf Day” event.

These baskets help sell raffle tickets … with Tony (and his team) who do a fantastic job making up the baskets for the event and then selling raffle tickets.

Fundraising is a total “Team” effort and once again we are asking the captains to collect from their players $10 to $20 (whatever you are comfortable with contributing) as part of an effort to raise anywhere between $120 to $240 (per team) for the basket drive.

Please see your captain and donate what you can towards the basket drive.

As always, we appreciate your fundraising efforts on Paul’s behalf.

Player Awards

You had 13-weeks to impress the judges and last week the secret voting ballots were sent to a select few to weigh in on the 2025 Winter Season Awards.  This is the same panel of judges that review all the Hall of Fame inductee nominations and are eagerly awaiting Matty Iannello’s nomination papers.  Hopefully he gets in on the first try.

Starting next week, tune in at the center rink before each game to see who the lucky winners are.

*** Spoiler Alert *** Sean Roach will win his second consecutive “Best Goalie Award” with his very impressive 2.0 GAA and (3) Shutouts.

Still up for grabs … “The Leading Scorer” as it’s still a tight race between Dominic DeFrancisco (32-points) and Gino Tammaro (28-points).  This is a big week for these two, as we head into the final turn before the homestretch and the finish line to Week #15 when Dom and Gino could be going head-to-head for the title.

Feed Bag

Don’t forget when you pack your hockey bag this week… to pack your “feed bag” and strap it on at 5:30 when Scoreboards Pub “& Grill” opens for a special one night only BBQ event.

“Pitmaster” Dave Giusti will be serving up Racks of Ribs, Prime Rib, Glazed Ham and Chicken Wings (all courtesy of Donny Maccini).  Thanks to Dave’s hard work and Donny’s generous meat donation… this is a “Player’s giving back to the players” special event.

To compliment the Chef, the ALD Mike Naczas will be bringing his special “Draft Day Kielbasa” courtesy of a special requester Dominic DeFrancisco.  The “Chief of Staff” Kellie Abcunas with be bringing her Spanish Rice dish … and since he can’t score goals, the “Webmaster” Jim Barber will be bringing a “Hat Trick” of sides that include Coleslaw, Maccaroni Salad and another fan favorite …

There will be enough food and selections to choose from…, in fact if we were handing out awards this week (instead of next) … we could have considered this event an “Over-30 Banquet”.

Week # 13 Saturday, March 22 2025
4:30 PM Barney & Friends 1  Dominions 8
5:30 PM Phoenix Rising 2  Azores Express 5
6:30 PM M*A*S*H 4  Hammertime 1

4:30 Barney & Friends vs. Dominions
#1 Star Derrick Power
#2 Star Dominic DeFrancisco
#3 Star Manny Nunes

Blowouts

Since Week #7 (February 15th) the Dominions have had (5) blowout wins on their way to a repeat championship attempt.

Last week captain Dominic DeFrancisco and his underboss Manny Nunes each had a 2-goal & 4-assist performance.  Leading in both “Goals For” (59) and “Goals Against” (32) the moral of the story is “Run” with them, or get blown out by them.

You can also try and slow them down, but have you ever seen Dom or Chris Torres not use all 5-gears racing back and forth on the rink.

“Power-house”

After being absent for a few weeks … Derrick Power is getting back to his former glory of running and wreaking havoc on the forecheck.  Derrick who had 2-goals was the games #1 Star and the Dunkin Donuts Player of the Week with his “Power-house” performance in the 8-1 blowout of Barney & Friends.

Whatever medical procedure he had done… hopefully it will help him contribute to another championship run.

Lunchpail Kid

The League Director loves that term “Lunchpail Kids”… so much so, that he named a Spring 2012 Championship Team with that same name.

Another “Lunchpail Kid” got his name on the scoring sheet last week as the lone goal scorer for his team.  #19 Mike Roberto scored Barney & Friends lone goal to break Sean Roach’s fourth potential shutout.

Say what you will, but Barney & Friends has the potential to be a high-powered offense with Mike Duggan, Leo Trombley, Angelo De Luca, Ray Nickerson and the late addition of Anthony Petrillo… but all of them were shut out by Sean Roach and it took a kid with a lunchbox and a Yeti filled with an adult beverage to keep them from being shutout.  Nice work Mike, and for the record, what is in that Yeti?

5:30 Phoenix Rising vs. Azores Express
#1 Star Gino Tammaro
#2 Star Mike Luise
#3 Star Pedro Fontes

Understaffed Loss

You have (7) … you play with (7) and unfortunately for Phoenix Rising it wasn’t the right (7) without #77 Matty Iannello who was missing from the lineup.  Then your group text has Mike O’Neill, Jose Silva, and the overtime hero Steve Iacoviello all going MIA for Week #13.  Oh and did we mention Dave Wilson was out too, or did we just get used to not seeing him all season.

Anyway, long story short… Phoenix Rising tried to hang in there with a 2-1 lead after the first period and even a 2-2 tie after the second period … but legends like Dan Broderick aren’t built for a 3-man defense scheme and Azores Express took advantage of that by scoring (3) unanswered goals in the 3rd period to solidify the win.

“PJ”

As the regular season winds down Azores Express captain Dave Costa is looking towards the playoffs and his secret weapon “PJ”.

“PJ” aka “Playoff Jake” aka Jake Deehan is third in the goalie standings, but second in GA with just 36-goals getting by him in 11-games.  That 36 includes (2) blowouts (Week #8 & Week #10) when 13-goals got by him.  If he missed those two games, he would have some Sean Roach like numbers and taking a run at the “Best Goalie Award”

When Brian “Cappy” Capodilupo isn’t playing “Get that Shit Outta Here!” defense… sorry wrong catch phrase, we meant “Yeeeeahhh Cap!” defense, he’s helping his team on the scoreboard too.

For two straight weeks now “Cappy” has had a 3-assist game … and last week Mike Luise also chipped in with 3-assists and a goal in the 5-3 victory.

This is exactly what we were saying about Azores Express… They score; they win!  They bitch; they lose.  So for Andy Brickley’s “Keys to the game”… “More scoring and less bitching”

6:30 M*A*S*H vs. Hammertime
#1 Star Joe Conary
#2 Star Dave Guisti
#3 Star Dave Norton

Strong Performances

With second line centerman Johnathan Caffarella missing a lot of games in recent weeks (including last week) it was up to Rob Sheridan to play major minutes for Hammertime.  Which is just what the “doctor” ordered.

Rob has been getting stronger and stronger as the season progresses… and hopefully he’ll be in peak performance shape for the playoffs.

Once again, with the team on his shoulders … Rob went into his bag of tricks and scored a beautiful backhand goal off the draw to ruin Dave Giusti’s first shutout bid with 2:34 left to play.

To match Rob’s major minutes and strong performance, Dave played exceptionally well in net last week for M*A*S*H, but with the faceoff deep in his own zone … we think Dave might have been distracted and going through his secret rub ingredients in his mind, or the fact that Donny Maccini dumped a Glazed Ham on him at the last minute, so Dave was thinking about cook times rather than Rob’s backhander that surprised the Pit Master.

Father Guido

Last week Joe “Father Guido” Conary had a two-goal performance that included the game winner.  “Guido” is not known for his scoring touch or even his goalie skills… he is best suited as the disruptor for M*A*S*H’s second line.  A player that is going to fly into the offensive zone, run around and make the defenseman panic … then get a dirty goal because of his hard work.  That is unless a defenseman passes it right to him high in the slot and he buries it for the first goal of the game (unassisted).

We tried to ask “Father Guido” about his two-goal performance last week…, but with March upon us, all he wanted to do was talk about some Saints.

Last Call

Last week Timmy “Tito” Burke played one last game before his season ending surgery.

His performance against Hammertime was like a “Tito’s Mixed Drink”… One part “Tito’s” … One part “Last Call” … and one part “FU&# Jim Barber” as Timmy did something in 5-games, that Jimmy hasn’t done in 11-games … Score a goal!

With his surgeon saying “That meniscus was beat up pretty good” … were hoping for a full and speedy recovery for one of the league’s premier sponsors.  We wonder if Timmy handed his Doctor a bottle of Tito’s Vodka after surgery for the “Surgeon of the Week” award.

MISI Hat Trick

So last week Timmy “Tito” Burke comes back to play one last game before his surgery, just in case it’s his last … as he doesn’t want to play hockey if he must run like Donny Maccini and he, also tied Donny for goals on the season with “ONE”.

So how does Timmy celebrate his 1-goal, 3-assist season… by scoring a “hat trick” in the MISI League on Thursday night (before his surgery on Friday).

Good luck with the recovery and “Stay Thirty My Friend”… oh sorry wrong booze catch phase.  We meant to say … “Stay Hard My Friend”

New Defenseman

Congratulations to Phoenix Rising defenseman Steve “Ike” Iacoviello it took him 11-games to score a goal this season and another 9-months to celebrate his other “scoring” touch.

Xavier Anthony Iacoviello

Born: 3-26-25 (“Ike” was hoping tfor 4-20-25)

Weight: 9lbs – 5oz

Height: 20” Long

Shoots: Righty

Position: Fetal (and soon Defense)

Rumor has it that “Ike” will now play to the age of 80 in the Over-30 League so that he can play with Xavier as the first Father & Son defensive pairing.

“Ike” will break Dan Broderick’s record as a 70-year old defenseman by 10-years.  Unless Dan’s doesn’t retire and plays another 30-years as they both wait for “X” to join them on Phoenix Rising 2055.
