Week of November 23 (Game 1) – The players from the spring 2006 My Brother’s Keeper team can now rest easy as another undefeated team in the Over-30 league, Blame the Girl, and most recent challenger to My Brother’s Keeper’s legacy, will no longer challenge them for an undefeated regular season. In a stunning upset, White Lightning jumped out to a commanding three goal lead in the first period and never looked back, rolling to a 5 – 3 victory over Blame the Girl.
The story of this game was the quick start by White Lightning which took a page out of Blame the Girl’s playbook in scoring early and often in the first period. Forty-seven seconds into this game, Jason Glista’s slap shot from the point, set up by Niko Vramis and Dave Curcio, went past the screened goalie. One minute later, Mike Hollingsworth scored his first goal of the season for Blame the Girl, as his slap shot was set up on the point by Tony Medeiros and John Leite. However, White Lightning picked up the pace, forcing the defense that resulted in a turnover leading to a Dave Curcio breakaway that simply undressed the goalie to put White Lightning back in front less than a minute later. With just over two minutes to play in the period, Jim Clarke’s screened shot from the point, set up by Niko, increased the lead by two goals.
In the second period it was more of the same as first Steve Oppedisano scored out front at the halfway mark, as he was set up by Tony Bono, which was followed by Dave Curcio’s second goal of the game, on a great pass from Niko.
In the third period, Blame the Girl made their push as the game picked up its physical play. First, Gary Goodwin scored an unassisted power play goal out front a minute and a half in. This was followed by a goal by Jon Pickard who was sprung down the high slot by Mike Hollignsworth. White Lightning almost fell apart with all the penalty’s they were taking, as two players were thrown out of the game, but held on for their fourth straight win.
Week of November 23 (Game 2) – How many other frustrating ways will the Golden Oldies have to endure in losing and not breaking through finally into the win column? After storming back from a two goal deficit in the third period, the Golden Oldies came up short again, losing late in the third period to the Shooting Stars by the score of 4 – 3.
Less than three minutes into the first period, the Shooting Stars John Desmond scored two quick goals, twenty-five seconds apart, set up by George Medeiros and Ray Dow respectfully.
In the second period, just under five minutes in, the Golden Oldies John Kelleher hustled his way in scoring a goal, set up by Anthony Lauletta and Dan Broderick to give his team the momentum. However, with less than ten seconds to play in the period, Mark Stickney made a very heads up veteran play by finding open space in the slot area to convert a quick feed from Dez and Jim Barber past a surprised Golden Oldies team and goalie.
In the third period, the golden Oldies made their own push in tying this game up early in the period, scoring two goals forty-nine seconds apart as John Kelleher scored his second goal and John Colucciello finally scored his first goal of this season. However, Sergio Costa stuck the dagger in the backs of the Golden Oldies with just under four minutes to play, on a bomb of a slap shot from the right wing, assisted by George Medeiros and John Mastrocola.
