Week of September 27 (Game 1) – Coming into this game, Legends Last Stand was once again missing most of its defensive core of players due to injuries, missing its best player, while another of its top forwards was out on IR with a lower body injury. Yet, with all of this and fielding a team with four fill-in players, they managed to make a game of this until finally losing on a late goal to FOURget About-it by the score of 5 – 2. Don’t let this score fool you; this was a much closer game than the final score indicated. With the win, FOURget About-it moved into first place overall.
For FOURget About-it, it has been four weeks of redundancy as once again it was John “Dez” Desmond led their offense. And this game was no exception as Dez opened up the game’s scoring three minutes in on a bang-bang set up by teammates Mark Stickney and Jim Barber. However, halfway through the period, two of the fill-in players for Legends Last Stand combined on their own bang-bang play out front to tie the game. With less than thirty seconds left in the period, it was John Lasala Jr. scoring his first goal of the season set up by Gary Goodwin giving Legends Last Stand the lead.
The second period saw both teams with scoring chances, yet, the only scoring belonged to FOURget About-its’ Carlos Machado, whose point shot with a minute to play in the period, set up by Mark Stickney, tied this game up.
In the third period, FOURget About-it developed some momentum through its running game to generate some offense and a wide open Jim Barber in the high slot buried his second goal of the season giving his team the lead and taking the air out of Legends Last Stands sails. All that was left was for two open net goals, including Dez’s punk move (or was it a defensive move or simple mistake) to score into an open net with only 12 seconds to play.
Week of September 27 (Game 2) – No one knew how That’s a Plus would come out and play this week after the previous week’s blowout loss; no one that is except the Portuguese Power duo of Tony Medeiros and Dominic Defrancisco. In a span of less than thirty seconds late in the first period, the outcome of this game was determined as That’s a Plus emerged with a convincing 6 – 3 win over the previously unbeaten Who Needs Superstars.
In the first period, two late goals scored sixteen seconds apart by Tony Medeiros, set up by Paul Castonguay and Dominic, provided all the momentum That’s a Plus would need in this game. Those two quick goals shifted all the game’s momentum over to That’s a Plus and stunned Who Needs Superstars.
Early in the second period, Tony Medeiros scored a natural hat trick with his third consecutive goal set up by Dominic in the high slot. A minute later, someone other than Tony scored as it was Sean Snelders (not Schneider) scoring his first goal of the season, set up by Dominic and John Leite. Late in the second period, in a span of three minutes, Who Needs Superstars made their offensive push scoring two goals to get back in this game. First, John Mastrocola scored, followed by Sergio Costa. However, in between, John Leite answered right back for That’s a Plus.
Early in the third period, Sergio scored his second goal of the game making this a two goal game; however, Tony Medeiros ended any comeback thoughts by burying his fourth goal of the game with two minutes to play to essentially close out this game. Not to be overlooked in all the Tony goal scoring was the fact that Dominic played a big role in his team’s offensive production as he set up five of his team’s goals scored. Portuguese Power duo indeed!
