“The Next One”
Sitting on 507-goals and tied for “All-Time Goals”.., Matty Iannello is chasing history this week as “The Great One” just “needs one” to break Joe Shannon’s record with 508-goals.
Technically the feat was already accomplished.., but a clerical error (aka another Referee screwup) credited teammate Nick Doherty with one of Matty’s goals.
So officially, we have to wait on #508 to happen before it can be officially recognized and documented by the league.
Let’s go Jake-O-Lanterns.., who wants to be the player that assisted on the historic record breaking goal and go down in league history as the guy who helped his Captain become the “All-Time #1 Player”… who’s it gonna be?
Official Greatness
Once Matty Iannello breaks Joe Shannon’s “All-Time Goals” record (508) he will officially become “The Great One” as he is already #1 in “All-Time Points” (1240pts) and #1 in “All-Time Assists” (703pts).., and also #1 in “All-Time Leading Scorer” with 17-titles.
Not So Great
The only titles “The Great One” hasn’t achieved is “Playoff MVP” that honor goes to Dave Costa & Joe Shannon both tied with (3) wins.., and the laughable “Season MVD” that was an I’ll-fated experiment last season.
He’ll also never achieve “The Greatest Champion” as Ed Nigro holds that title with 16-Championships and the “The Greatest Captain” as that goes to Jim Barber with 9-Championships in 16-Seasons (56%).
But with the living legend Dan Broderick still playing at age 62.., and Matty only 51.., he still has 11-years to try and achieve those illusive titles.
Quote
We reached out to Joe Shannon for a quote on his friend and former teammate Matty Iannello and breaking his 507-goals record.
In an interview with Joe, he said: “he’s glad it’s Matty but he’s also lucky my hips and knees are shot.., otherwise he’d be chasing 607-goals.., and there is one record that he (nor anyone else!) in the Over-30 League will ever break and that’s my single season record of 35-goals and 65-points!
Singe Season Record:
Joe Shannon 65-Points (35g, 30a)
Ray’s Whiners – Spring 1995.
Optical Illusion
Several players were asking “Who’s the chubby guy with the beard” talking to Billy before the games last week.
That optical illusion was none other than COVID opt-out Jason Glista.., and by the looks of it he’s been spending his opt-out time... opting out on shaving and excerise.
Jason.., just make sure you’re in-shape and ready this fall for the 30th year anniversary season.., it’s going to be one for the decades.
Gametime
We have grown to expect it from Donny Maccini showing up late (or after the game has started).., but last week his tardiness spread to the whole team.
With 3:30 left on the warmup clock there was only (2) Drama Queens on the dek and (1) on the bench getting dressed.
Now we’re not saying you have to be Bob Snyder early.., but let’s try and be ready to go when the horn sounds.
Italian Salute
After being called out in the press for his lack of production Timmy Hickey scored his first goal of the season and the proceeds to “Italian Salute” the front office staff and press reporters.
However.., the goal was not a result of his efforts.., it was a miss played ball by George Medeiros’ clearing attempt that he mishandled that basically put the ball right on “Timmm-aaah’s” stick.
Keep working Timmy… we weren’t impressed with that goal. It was a bad turnover.
Masters?
This wasn’t the Master’s Tournament where Team USA vs DC United was vying for the Master’s Championship.., it’s an Over-30 game that got ugly between two “Master’s??”
Jamie Kehoe and Jon Picard got matching penalties for their battle in the corner that got a little ugly.., and then even uglier after the game as the unsportsmanlike conduct continued.
Gentleman we expect better of you, especially for players of your caliber.
Portuguese Talents
The Portuguese are known for a few things.., their drinking ability.., their Soccer playing (where they learn the art of flagrant diving).., and also their hand-eye and coordination.
Last week Carlos Machado demonstrated the latter part with a beautiful hand-eye coordinated effort to beat Jake Brum.
Nick Doherty put a wicked slapshot on Jake Brum (who made the initial save) off his shoulder… but the velocity of the rebound came of Jake’s shoulder as was 5-feet in air in front of Carlos. Carlos (not drunk yet) effortlessly batted down the rebound deflection… and as his batted down ball (was rebounding up) Carlos tipped it off the backside of his blade putting it top corner on Jake. This was all done in one seamless motion… but despte his efforts they would go on to lose the game.
So what do the Portuguese like to do after losing… “It’s Rum Chata Time”. Come to think of it… the like to drink after a win too.
Double Trouble
Poor Steve Silveira got into double trouble when he jumped out of the penalty box 3-seconds early. Unfortunately for him.., he did it right in front of one of the prison guards who foiled his escape attempt and sent him back in to serve another 1-minute.
Remember it’s up to you to confirm with the timekeeper for your exact parole time.
Pouncing Lesson
Nick Doherty has youth, speed, a great one-timer… but he lacks the breakaway skills, the killing instinct when you need to “pounce” on a lack of defense.
Last week Nick got to watch a true “Master” in action who has a killer instinct on a breakaway.
Last week TEAM USA Masters Jon Picard tied the game at 2-2 with a breakaway on Jake Brum.., and we’re still checking the records to figure out if that was Jake’s first breakaway goal that he let up.
Nick was afforded the same effort… and was sent in all alone on a breakaway that he.., (yep you guessed it) missed burying his opportunity.
So Nick… you have to watch (and learn) from the “Master” and to make this lesson simple for you.., we’ll put it in video form that is more related to your age about watching, listening and learning from a “Master”
