Bill Mayne Memorial Award – Winter 2004
|
Jim has always been known for his speed up and down the wing, but, what stands out as Jim’s biggest asset as a player in the Over-30 league is his coaching skills as captain and leader of his teams. The numbers cannot be denied that this is true as Jim has won three of the last four championships since he was designated as a team captain back in the winter 2012 season (including a 3-peat from spring 2013 – spring 2014). Balancing running his team with scoring the occasional goal is one of Jim’s strongest skills.
Perhaps even more important than his success on the rink has been Jim’s efforts behind the scenes and the creative ways he helps keep the Over-30 fresh and new. It was Jim’s idea to create and develop the league website; hence the Over-30 website was born. As a result of this innovative concept, various web pages were created to recognize every player in the league, ensuring that every player has a chance to grab the spotlight, and giving Jim the nickname of “web master”. Soon thereafter, the revised and enhanced Forum newsletter followed, putting further spotlight on league players and leveraging the use of multi-media forms of communication. Player spotlights and season milestones highlights soon followed. In addition, it was the generosity of Jim’s family in providing the over-30 league with a bowling facility for its season ending bowling event. Finally, Jim came up with the “Pink Stick Bag Challenge” contest and became the first (and until recently the only owner to date) recipient of the pink stick bag for offensive futility. We still don’t know how Jim is able to fit all of this Over-30 responsibility in his 15 hour days together with working multiple jobs.
Playing now in his 26th season and wearing his familiar number 10, Jim has won 6 championships and is in the upper tiers of championship jacket winners in Over-30 league history. Currently, Jim forms part of the new “Big 3” of the Over-30 league together with Mark Stickney and John Desmond for their recent success and current 3-peat record holders.
Rumors & Facts:
- Web master or Web excuse maker who has no time to “Do His Job” with the website?
- Idolizes Matty the Great One, striving to become 1/10th of the player who is his role model
