Week of November 11 (Game 1) – With Maybe One on their bye week, Team Cherry had a prime opportunity to take advantage of this and move into that fourth and final playoff spot alone. Team Cherry did just that as they put a convincing end to Fool’s Gold four game winning streak with a solid 7 – 4 win. Coming into this game, Fool’s Gold was the hottest team in the Over-30 league. After this performance, and Team Cherry having won three of their last four games, it appears that there is a new hot team in the Over-30 league, that being Team Cherry.
In a wide open shootout of a first period, Team Cherry scored the game’s first two goals in sending the message to Fool’s Gold that they had come to play. Five minutes into the period saw Joe Carlton get set up by Ron Aquino for the game’s first goal. A minute later saw Gary Goodwin score his first goal of the season when he was set up by Paul Correia and Mark Stickney. Needing an answer to stop the momentum, Fool’s Gold’s George Medeiros as he did last week, scored his team’s first goal a minute later as he was set up by Sergio Costa and Steve Medeiros. This was followed by Joe answering right back a minute later, again set up by Ron. A minute after that, John Kelleher was set up out front by Niko Vramis pulling his team back within a goal.
In the second period, Team Cherry continued to pressure Fool’s Gold and this paid off as they broke open the game by scoring twice. Six minutes into the period saw Joe score his third goal on a booming slap shot, set up by Brian Kehoe. With under a minute to play, Ron hustled in close, set up by Brian, to give his team a commanding three goal lead.
The third period saw each team score two goals, matching any momentum swings. Thirty seconds into the period, Sergio was set up by Mauro Colucciello. Two minutes later, Gary scored his second goal of the game on a slap shot after he was set up by Jason Carrien and Steve. With just over four minutes to play, Mauro jumped on a scramble out front to muscle in an unassisted goal. Finally, with thirty seconds left to play, Joe put an exclamation on his offensive scoring burst by scoring his fourth goal of this game, set up by Brian.
Week of November 11 (Game 2) – In the season’s first “playoff-like” atmosphere, Trojan Horse showed no lingering effects from coming off their bye week, as they won their second game in a row by defeating Blues Brothers 5 – 4 and jump back into sole possession of first place in the standings. For Blues Brothers, they have now lost three games in a row, primarily due to their first line not being able to score goals as a unit.
In an intense first period with both teams not giving any space to the other and close checking the norm, Trojan Horse struck first, six minutes in as Walter Maslak converted a pass from Shawn Miville and Nick Romano. However, less than two minutes later, rookie Todd Bryson scored an unassisted goal, his second goal in his last two games.
The second period saw a flurry of goals scored fast and furious as both teams had huge momentum swings. Three minutes in saw Tony Medeiros get set up by Tim Hickey and Dominic Defrancisco giving his team the lead and momentum. However, Trojan Horse answered right back from an unexpected source as Jim Barber scored two goals in a span of thirty seconds only twelve seconds after Tony’s goal. The sudden outburst and gut punch seemed to stun Blues Brothers. Regaining their composure two minutes later saw Mike Luise convert rebounds of shots by Tony and John Leite, retying this game. Another momentum swing took place with thirty seconds to play in the period as Angelo Deluca was set up by Jim Barber giving Trojan Horse the lead again.
In the third period, three minutes in, Shawn took advantage of a power play as he was set up by Nick to give his team a two goal lead and some breathing room. However, less than two minutes later, Tim Hickey’s individual hustle resulted in a goal, as he was set up by Tony and Bob Snyder. The game went right down to the last seconds but Trojan Horse held on to earn a crucial two points in the standings.
