Big Mike, one of the original “twin towers” playing defense in the Over-30 league, has always been a reliable team player and solid top defenseman. Mike has the uncanny ability to knock a ball out of the air to keep it in the offensive zone and it is very difficult to get the ball by him one-on-one. For a big man, he has the ability to always put himself in the right position to break up a rush by the opposing player or snuff out a scoring chance.
Playing in his 34th season and wearing his customary number 4 shirt, you will never mistake Mike for Bobby Orr. This gentle giant of a player will never dazzle you with finesse or wow you with offensive goal production; rather, he will always play steady defense and be counted on to make the right play. A smart thinker on the rink that always reads the play in front of him very well, Mike is one of the best team mates you want to have on your team.
Rumors & Facts:
- Now that Mike’s twin tower defenseman Bill Mack is on long-term injured reserve, he is worried about being phased out by the new breed of Over-30 twin tower defensemen in Mike Surette and Mike Florentino
- Mike is the only non-goalie player to be wearing a goalie-sized shirt
- League doctors have recommended that Mike be placed on a strict low calorie and carbohydrate diet so he can fit back into a XXL sized shirt. Because Omar the tent maker would charge too much to custom tailor a bigger shirt for Mike.
- Exempt from any future Smiling Pete Lodi Stick Back Challenges because the Over-30 League cannot afford to purchase a stick bag that large for Mike’s sticks.
- Was once the fastest defenseman in the league… Yeah right, remember this is the “rumors” and facts section of the Players Spotlight.
- Fact: Has a brother in law Jason that can shoot a hockey ball 175mph that dips and curves so bad that any shot on net ends up in either corner.
