Permission to Return
“Guess who’s back… back again.., Rolli’s back tell your friends”. Tony Rolli got “Special permission” from Mrs Rolli to return to the Over-30 for the 2023 Spring Season. I know what you’re thinking.., “How did the new defending champs get a “#1” draft pick of Tony’s caliber?”
To be honest… Tony’s half season return deal was signed back in November before Captain’s Mutiny went on their extraordinary playoff run knocking off the 3rd, 1st, and 4th place teams to win their unexpected and unpredicted championship.
Welcome back to the Over-30 Tony… No pressure coming back to a team that is now marked by 5 other teams in the league.
It looks like Doug Sedille also got “Special permission” to return to the league and competitive play after bowing out during the pandemic. Doug will be filling in with Paul White (who has a set of balls.., and didn’t need any “Special permission” to return… he just told his wife the league needs me again) and both players will pair up on defense for Captain’s Mutiny. They are filling in for the month log assignment as Colleen O’Connell and Shawn Mulchay are trying their hands at “Snowbirding” to Florida for the month of January.
John Hines is another familiar face returning to the Over-30 League as a special assignment defensive player. John is getting his foot in the door this season in hopes of filling a vacated (or retired) spot in the 2023-2024 Winter Draft.
So welcome back Tony Rolli, Doug Sedille, Paul White and John Hines.
New Challenger
It looks like Dave Costa is our latest “Pink Shirt Challenger” as he didn’t want to say “NO” and be part of the first ever “Tandem NO’ers” to play on the same team. Unlike his fellow unnamed teammate.., Dave stepped up and accepted his challenge.
Dave who wears number “55” is the “5th” Defenseman to take the challenge and he has to score “5” goals to earn his “PASSED” status. Is the #5 going to be lucky for Dave this season?
The question is.., which group of fellow defenseman will Dave be joining at the end of this season; Dan “The Legend” Broderick and Jason “Overrated” Carrien in the “PASSED” Division… or with Ray “F’em” Dow and Mike “Get that shit out of here” Naczas in the “FAILED Division.
2023 First(s)
Was does Brian “Cappy” Capodilupo and the 2018 Vegas Golden Knights have in common?
They were both 500:1 odds if you bet on them. If we told you that Brian “Cappy” Capodilupo was 500:1 to score the first hattrick of the season (and while he played defense) how much would you have wagered on “Cappy”?
The very next game Paul Sequeira also had a hattrick (and 1) to be the first player to post a 4-goal game of the 2023 Spring Season. Two of Paul’s goals were unassisted even through Ray Nickerson was clearly waiving $20 bills at the timekeeper’s box. Sorry Ray.., no phantom assists this season, and certainly not for $20 anymore.., with Biden’s new inflation numbers.., maybe someone like say “Ulysses S. Grant” might get a phantom #8 on the scoring sheet.
Steve Taddonio was an even money bet to post the first shutout of the season.., and it came with a statement as he shoutout the defending champs 5-0. It’s still tough to believe that Steve got bounced in the semi-finals 2-1.., but the Roadrunners are now the 2023 odds favorites.
Freebie
Congratulations Gary Wurlitzer.., not only do you get lucky enough to win a championship in your very first season.., but your second season is also on the house courtesy of the first ever “Free Season Raffle”. We can’t post the video.., but assure us it was legit with Derek Donegan almost winning if it wasn’t for the last little tick to land on Gary.
Bowling Night
In case you missed it.., the “Over-30 Bowling Night” to support our Paul Correia fundraising efforts was a fun night. Although a lot of players donated but couldn’t attend it was a lot of fun watching players like Ron Aquino, Marty Makarewicz and Jason Carrien beat seasoned weekly bowlers like Matty Iannello and Jim Barber for the $1 a box prize pots. As usual Mike Naczas donated his weekly allowance but didn’t go home empty-handed as he won the final match of the night. Ron won the league sponsored $15 frame ($21 in total) and proved it’s better to be lucky than good.
Next up… Another big announcement is in the works regarding our next fundraising event.
Hidden Message
Last season the Roadrunners took full advantage of Captains Mutiny with convincing wins of 5-2, 8-1, and another 8-1. It was fate that had Devils Disciples knocking out the Roadrunners 2-1 otherwise we would be fitting a different team this weekend for championship jackets.
However.., during their first meeting of the season and another 5-0 loss Captains Mutiny Captain Matty Iannello sent fellow Roadrunners Captain Dominic Defrancisco a little hidden message last week.., and that message was “Don’t run up the score.”
With a 5-0 lead Dominic and Matty collided in the corner with Dominic’s eye flying into Matty’s elbow.., but before a penalty could be assessed Matty went into full “defensive” mode claiming he might be out for the season with an injury;
