Director Acknowledgements
As Director, I would like to recognize all six team captains for everything you have done,
during both seasons of the Over-30 league. You all were asked before the winter 2022 season began to volunteer as team captains and take on the responsibilities of running your teams. Not just in playing and doing your best to lead your teams, but also for all the behind the scenes asks from myself while communicating this to all your players.
Thank you (Captains) for your time and assistance in helping me run this league.
To Mike Naczas, my Assistant League Director, and wearer of many hats before, during and after “game days.” There are too many responsibilities to mention that he takes on, but without his volunteer efforts and support every Saturday, the league would not be run so smoothly or successfully.
From his consistent early arrival to the rink every Saturday to set up everything on game days, to his putting up the display board with all the league stats, handing out and taking the weekly awards photos, volunteering if needed to fill in as a referee or timekeeper, selling raffle tickets, helping keep the games on time, updating the website pages with stats and photos every Sunday morning.
Naz also plays host for all league meetings at his house and contributes fresh new ideas for the league, as well as running the league in my absence as needed.
All this (and more) while finding the time to play in the league (and begging for assists).
To Jim Barber, aka the Webmaster and League Historian, for his insight into making this league the very best league you will ever participate and play in. For his marketing thoughts in constantly promoting the league and its 30+ year history, to recognizing and celebrating individual players’ achievements using his 31-years of players stats and historical data.
He often gives me the perspective of the players point of view, contributing fresh new ideas for the league and maintaining the league website and its overall look. All this and more with a lot of time devoted behind the scenes (and off-season) that typically go unnoticed but has a big impact on what the league is all about.
Lastly; volunteering to fill in as a timekeeper if needed (but never as a referee),
To Kellie Abcunas, aka the Chief of Staff. Some of you refer to her as the real Director of the Over-30 League, and you may be correct. She is my sounding board whom I bounce and discuss ideas off for her perspective, someone I can discuss issues and decisions that need to be made on league matters, someone who gives me perspective.
Her input is invaluable. She is my consigliere on all league matters. As a former player herself, she understands this game we all play. For her role as draft consultant, to shirt designer and creator, to league treasurer, to game day game sheet co-statistician, to referee/timekeeper observer, to keeping the games on time, her time and efforts are invaluable.
Most importanly keeping Rocco and Moose at bay from the players.
I cannot forget the dedication that our game day officials commit to on a weekly basis.
Referees Jon Picard, Ric Alywin and Mike Dube. You guys have the toughest job of us all…, the leagues frontline punching bags for missed calls, bad calls, missed and phantom goals.., and missing secondary assists. The policing and babysitting for 90-minutes each week along with enduring the derating from your friends and fellow teammates is greatly appreciated.
Just remember the league always has your backs. Without you we might as well play in the parking lot of Hockeytown and then no one gets credit for goals and assists.
Lastly, to the Writers of the Forum (whoever you may be) who abide by the motto “The Forum writes itself,” thank you for once again keeping us entertained every week, trying to make us laugh, highlighting statistical data and bringing a smile to our faces with your wit and observations.
Season 31 Wrap-up
We introduced a new updated contemporary “Old Man” logo thanks to Jason Glista and a new Championship jacket thanks to Todd Bryson.
This marks the end of another historic season for the Over-30 League. The first half of the season we witnessed Captain’s Mutiny join the ranks of the Winter 2004 team Huff & Puff with a last place seed and a championship win.
We gained back another iconic legend in the game with Rob Sheridan, who returned to the Over-30 League after a 17-year hiatus and proved this is still the perfect league for him to dominate (and have fun) playing in.
We’re watching to see if Mike Duggan can join the very exclusive 30-goal Club?
Will the Roadrunners be the first team in history to go undefeated from the starting line to the finishing line?
Congratulations to the past season(s) Milestones: Winters Season Achievers: Ray Dow (400-points), Brian Capodilupo (300-points), Mike Surette (100-points), John Mastrocola (100-assists) and our Spring Season Achievers; Jim Barber (200-goals) and Pat Pirone (300-assists). Congratulations and we’ll see you at the next mile maker.
We watched an original veteran and “All-time Championship Leader” Ed Nigro have his number #7 be officially retired and announced the building of the virtual Over-30 Hall of Fame and its first inductee with Ed Nigro.
We hosted our first ever Over-30 Golf Tournament with the “Drive & Putt for Paul”
We’re hosting our 2nd Season Ending Jamboree in a row with the “Paul C Jamboree”
What lies ahead for the Over-30 League (Season 32)..., A 7th team? More retirements? Another inductee to the Over-30 Hall of Fame? The 2023-2024 Rookie Class is filled with talent and return veterans impactful players waiting for their name to be called on draft day.
Until then… Good Luck in the playoffs and we’ll be back in September
