“Cooch” always plays with an intense focus stemming from his Italian heritage, thinking the game through at every facet of the game (sometimes over-thinking it too much) and reading the game as it plays out in front of him. A smart play-maker and good passer, Cooch has a lethal hard shot that he doesn’t take as much as he should, instead looking to set up a team mate. If Cooch would just make the simple play instead of the highlight reel play he could be such a dynamic player. When he does shoot, the ball usually finds the back of the net.
Playing now in his 32nd season, Cooch has shown his durability as either a first line or second line center. His pre-game routine and stretching is right up there with Over-30 legends like Dan Broderick and former player Steve Oppedisano for its commitment. What sets Cooch apart from most other players is his adaptability whereby he can play his natural center position but also move comfortably onto the wing or even onto defense and not miss a step.
Cooch’s longevity in the Over-30 league has been rewarded as he moved into the top ten active players on the all-time career stats closing in on 400 points.
Rumors & Facts:
- John has one of the most infamous faceoff “pre-draw rituals” that drives the opposing players and the referee’s nuts. It’s like he’s doing the Hokey Pokey.., He steps in, he steps out… does this weird thing with this arms.., resets again before awkwardly crouching for the draw.
- Cooch leads the league in “Behind the back blind passes” to absolutely no one.
- His best defensive partner is the lower goal bar behind the net… as Cooch has shaken off many opposing players by doing his patented “self-pass” off the back bar.
- His “Pre-Game” stretches are even more ridiculous than his face-off antics.., we’re pretty sure he got his stretches and arms twists from an old Jane Fonda VHS tape.
- Everyone knows his brother Mauro plays in the league.., but it’s a little known fact that John gets his hugging technique from his famous sister Morganna aka “The Kissing Bandit”
- Billy has several “restraining orders” barring John from hugging Kellie… and every one of them has been ignored.., which is part of the reason Cooch will never wear a “C” on his chest.
- Recently John tried to institute his own Over-30 rule by insisting that the referees count “Two-Mississippi’s” before blowing the whistle on a ball that lands on the back of the net.
