Official Newsletter of the Old-Time Hockey Over-30 League

35-Seasons and counting...

Article 573 - September 12, 2026

Opening Statement

For the 30th Anniversary Season we went for the “Wow Factor” to celebrate three decades of The Over-30 Hockey League.  Five years later and once again we are preparing to make another BIG splash to celebrate another league milestone with our 35th year of competition.

With only one new rookie this season, Ben Tomsyck will mark the 518th rostered player to play in the league with an official stat line.

Instead of 68-championship teams, we only crowned 67-Champions as we lost a year to the COVID-19 Pandemic.  Of those 67-Teams that earned their names being etched on a plaque for the trophy, only (1) has had the distinct honor of being the only team to have a perfect season, when we crowned the Roadrunners as the 2023 Spring Season Champions (aka “Team Perfection”)

In the past 58-seasons, only (1) player has scored more than 30-goals and that was Mike Duggan (31-goals) with Marooned during the 2024 Spring Season, when he scored 6-goals in his final game of the season.  Prior to that it was Doug Sedille (33-goals) during the 1996 Winter Season with the Bushwhackers.

Both players were just shy of the All-Time record set in 1995 by Joe Shannon (35-goals) and he even did it twice (back-to-back) to prove a point.  The only other player to have 30+ goals in a single season was Mike Luise in 1995.  So that exclusive 30-goals Club is always looking for new members.

For the 6-goalies in the league, your record attempt is also nearly impossible to break as back in the 2006 Spring Season (20-years ago) Goaltender Jimmy Osgood played 11-games and only let up 14-goals for a 1.27 GAA.  The next closest to that was Scotty Rosato in 2023 with his 1.71 GAA, playing 14-games and only 24-goals got by him.

Also, for the record Ray Nickerson has the single season assist record with 39-assists, set back in the Spring 1997 Season… and the closest player to Ray’s 39-assists is Ray himself with 37-assists just the season prior.  Which just goes to show you that he was either a really good passer and playmaker, or he used intimidation and cash to bribe league officials for points… and the truth is, it’s probably a combination of both.

We’ll be continuing with another season of giving back to the players with weekly awards, monthly giveaways, raffles and prizes… and it all starts on Saturday September 12th with something we’ve never done before in the leagues history, and players will also get a little commemorative item courtesy of Jim Barber, the league’s Chief Historian, All-Time Statistician, Webmaster, Director of Marketing, and a Board Member who spent his summer months working on a special project for your personal keepsake and enjoyment.

Commitment

Every Spring Season we start the forum by stressing the importance of “Commitment”

The Over-30 League has always been and always will be an “Invitational Only” League.  We don’t want or need the best players around, we want the players with good characteristics, good teammates, and yes (good players), but we really stress the importance of “Commitment”.

Commitment to your teammates by showing up each week… Commitment to the league by paying your dues on time… and Commitment to yourself to be the best player you were drafted and projected to be.

Do those three simple things and we’ll all get along just fine… Like Bill Belichick once said, “Do Your Job” and focus on yourself (Scoring, Defending or Saving) and being a good teammate.  Let the league handle the league business.  It’s been working successfully for the past 34-years (67-Seasons) and we see no reason to change.

What’s new for this season:

New Rule for 2026-2027

If the ball is shot onto (or knocked onto) the side and/or back of the goalie net, NO WHISTLE will be blown immediately by the referees, thus allowing players the opportunity to knock the ball off the net and to continue play in the zone.  Putting the ball back into play is going to help keep the games moving along.

However, if the ball remains on the netting after multiple unsuccessful attempts to move it, the referees will have the discretion to blow the whistle for a stoppage in play.  The resulting face off will be deep in the zone, regardless of which player caused the ball to land on the netting.

AI Logo’s

With the 35th Anniversary, we wanted to pay tribute to the “Original 6” NHL Teams, as we looked to mimic the origins of the NHL, but with our own Over-30 twist.

Once again, we turned to ChatGPT to help create our new 2026-2027 team logos.  As always, the logos are not designed for the jerseys, but for use on the website and team shorts (if desired) or team apparel that we will try and make available on our Over-30 Apparel Shop through our collaboration with the store creator & manager Todd Bryson.

This year Kellie Abcubas worked with Todd Bryson on the design of the “Original 6” NHL teams and using their original colors…  but we wanted to put the Over-30 spin on the names.  ChatGPT pretty much hit it out of the park with the logos on the first attempt (with minimal edits).

Every year the team logos get better-and-better and this year we are excited about the names and logos.

AI & “NIL” Agreement

Beginning in the 2025-2026 seasons, the Over-30 League began using AI through ChatGPT to add a new layer of dynamic humor to the weekly forum.  The use of AI is not to humiliate or belittle any of the league’s players and their abilities.  The use of AI generated cartoons is for entertainment purposes only and are not rooted with any bias, race, sexual, religious, hockey skill levels and/or political affiliation.  The cartoons are designed with a comedic intent without degrading, personally attacking or embarrassing any of the league’s players.

With the evolving expansion of AI and its capabilities, the league is going to be expanding its AI content to include “Live Action” generated images of players in various Over-30 hockey themed skits.

If you wish to participate or opt-out of this type of NIL (Name, Image, Likeness) usage of technology, you can do so by checking “Yes or No” in the boxes on the opening day registration waiver.

Giving Back

We continue to give back to the players with Monthly Giveaways.  Director of Fundraising Tony Medeiros is already thinking up some exciting new drawings, raffles and fun ways to raise funds that ultimately go back to you the players, and our continuing efforts to raise money for the Paul Correia Fund.

Stay tuned as we announce monthly prizes, raffles, and highlight the winners.

Podcast

To celebrate our 35th Anniversary we wanted another “Fresh New Idea” and it came from the League Director himself.  Bill reached out to former 4x Champion and Podcast guru Bob Snyder for his help.

Bob has been tasked with putting together a 4-part Podcast covering current and former players and their experiences while playing in the league.  The four segments include the founding fathers of the league, various players and the Hall of Fame inductees.

More details to follow… Look for its release sometime later in 2026.

MAD Season

The Chinese are celebrating 2026 with “The Year of the Fire Horse” The Fire Horse (or Red Horse / Chi Ma) combination occurs only once every 60-years in the Chinese zodiac's 60-year elemental-animal calendar. The previous Fire Horse year was 1966.

From Google AI - “The Year of the Fire Horse” 2026.
