Our Condolences

We wanted to send our sincerest condolences to Jon Picard and his family on the loss of his mother last weekend.

There are currently no planned services, but a celebration of life for both of his parents will take place sometime in the spring.

“Wing-ah” Winners

A few weeks ago, there were a couple of defensemen that were putting food on the table, courtesy of the Over-30 League and Market Basket.

Last weekend it was a couple of “Wing-ah’s” as Pat Pirone likes to say when he needs a shift change… and ironically it was Pat and Pedro Fontes, both “Wing-ah’s” from Poo Bears that each won a $150 gift certificate to Encore.

Also, ironically it was their captain Dave Costa who won $300 to Encore last season, are the Gambling Gods and the Hockey Gods in collusion… Which makes us wonder if we should be placing some WynnBet wagers on the Poo Bears to win it all this season?

Waiver Wire

With the rosters about to close… and due to an excessive number of injuries this season, we had some last-minute additions to a couple of rosters and the league.

For The Revolution, Mike Braga has officially shut it down after only two games… too bad we barely got to know him before his doctors pulled the plug on his season.  Mike’s roster spot will be filled by Dan Poirier Sr.

After Dan filled-in Saturday and scored a hat trick… Players on The Revolution started sounding like a kid that found a puppy on the streets, asking their captain Jim Barber if we can keep him?

Capo-Zero has been hit by the IR bug too… Both John Carey and Rob Greene are on the PUP list and Shawn Mulcahy is clinging onto the last of his glory days with various stints on IR.  Which just leaves Jamie Kehoe as the lone healthy defensive anchor for them.

Undrafted defenseman Steve Medeiros is making his return to action and will be added to the Capo-Zero roster for the rest of the regular season.  His playoff eligibility will be subject to review in December.

Welcome to the Over-30 League, Kevin Johnson, who beat the sign-up deadline on Friday.  Kevin has been tasked to backfill teams that have multiple players on IR.  Kevin will be the official fill-in player on an “as-needed” basis (based on a team IR report).

Rosters are closed after this week, but teams with 7-players could still see Kevin playing for them if  a team’s IR report has multiple documented players on it.

The league is encouraging players to commit weekly (especially down the stretch) so healthy scratches do not count towards the 7-players minimum rule.  All fill-ins are subject to League Director discretion only.  Kevin’s playing status is only applicable to the remainder of the regular season, his playoff eligibility is subject to review.

With two days and 12-games of competition… we decided we cannot possibly write about every game, as it would just be too long and too much work.  So instead, we are going to focus on the highlights and lowlights from the doubleheader weekend.

Hat Tricks

Congratulations to Pedro Fontes who was unanimously voted as the player of the weekend by not only scoring (1) hat trick… but after the first one felt so good on Saturday (without) Rob Sheridan in the line-up… Pedro wanted to show Rob what he missed, and he did it again on Sunday.

Which leads us to our latest Sniglet… “Fontastic” is when a player has an unbelievable weekend at hockey.  Pedro had a “Fontastic” weekend last week when he scored two hat tricks, earned two #1 stars and also won $150 to Encore.

Tommy Gallagher was next on the hat trick list… with three of his own on Saturday, which proves our theory that as good as Mike Duggan and Patrick Spencer are… the glue that holds that team together is Tommy.

Rounding out “Hat Trick Saturday”… fill-in forward Dan Poirier Sr scored his way into a full-time roster spot with his natural hat trick.  Dan scored 2-goals in the last minute of the 3^rd period to impress the League Director, received several cheers from his peers… and his “last-minute” scoring helped ink his winter contract deal.

On Sunday, Mike Duggan and Tommy Guns were shocked at the first 3-unanswered goals of the game that The Revolution threw their way.  Tommy Guns battled back to make it 3-2 after the second… but then Mike put his NBHL talents on display and scored a hat trick in the 3^rd period to dash any hopes of a “Revolutionary Streak”

Every Goal

We’re not sure if this has ever happened and quite frankly, we don’t have the patience to look back into the archives… but Manny Nunes did something extraordinary last weekend when he factored in on every one of his team’s goals.

Manny scored 1-goal and 3-assists on Saturday’s 4-0 win over First Responders and on Sunday he scored 2-goals and 1-assist during their 6-3 loss to Tommy Guns. 

For Manny, 3-goals, 4-assists to factor into every goal for his team is a good weekend of hockey and now he sits just outside of the Top-3 on the Leader Board with 17-points.

Undefeated Weekend

Tommy Guns led by Tommy Gallagher and Poo Bears led by Pedro Fontes both played key roles in their teams going undefeated over the weekend.

Both teams are now 6-3-0 and tied for first… but the tie breaker goes to Sean Roach and his shutdown goaltending, to compliment his shutdown defense, who together played a key role in keeping captain Dave Costa in the top seed.

Treading Water

First Responders and The Revolution were both treading water with their 1-1 weekend games.

With the help of their last-minute roster acquisition Dan Poirier Sr., The Revolution were able to tread water with a 1-1 weekend record… but it may have cost them a couple of players as captain Jim Barber and Steve Silveira went down with lower body injuries, and trips to the IR list.

Dominic DeFrancisco’s frustration 4-0 loss on Saturday turned into bookend goals on the scoring sheet for Sunday… as Dom scored the first and last goal of their 6-0 win. 

Dave Giusti logged his first shutout of the season with his 17-shots shutout performance… wait, only 17-shots? 

Does that meet the mandatory minimum for a goalie to record a shutout?  With 17-shots, was it stella goaltending (maybe)… piss-poor shooting by the opposing team (probably)… or someone not tracking all the shots properly (doubt it).

Either way… Congratulations Dave on your first shutout.

Defeated Weekend

Former top seed Capo-Zero had a rough weekend.  They had a “Max-less” and “Win-less”… and almost a “Goal-less” weekend, as Angelo De Luca was the only player to score a goal for them during their entire 60-minutes of competition.

Look for Capo-Zero and Dale McIssac to quickly turn things around.  The last time Dale was lit up like a pinball machine he bounced back with a couple of shutouts.

Cam-A-Lot is now missing “Cam a lot” as they only mustered up 3-goals over the weekend, with two of those goals coming off their captain Tony Medeiros’ stick… and, the 3^rd goal was scored by their fill-in player… so technically, they only scored two goals of their own.

Referee’s Corner

We witnessed Lee Nogler and his Referee rarity… don’t quote us on this, but Lee might be the first referee to call a penalty in a zone that “was not his zone”.

Lee used the “See something, Say something and Call something” technique to call a penalty that many other Referees would not… and then use the standard Referee response of “that’s not my zone.”  Congrats Lee, that earned you extra points with the League Director and his quest to find the perfect Player/Referee fill-in

Also, add another player, Referee, to the list of successful players that have earned their stripes and volunteered to referee (that was not a league mandated punishment)  Jason Carrien donned his stripes and whistle for the middle tilt on Saturday.

How did Jason compare to the other four Player Referee’s?

Streak-On!

It’s a good thing Poo Bears won on Saturday… but if they lost, they could have blamed Rob Sheridan who failed to “Respect the streak” on Sunday. 

Coming into Sunday the Poo Bears had a 3-game winning streak with the last two being without Rob in the line-up, that just proves that the Poo Bears are the real deal and another championship in the making for captain Dave Costa, with or without Rob.

We are Family

The Revolution captain Jim Barber has officially had all three of the Poirier family now play for him.  First it was Scott Daniliuk who lasted only a few games (or maybe one) with Captain’s Mutiny… followed by his younger half-brother Dan Poirier Jr. on White Lies… and now Dan Poirier Sr. signed with The Revolution through 2026.

We asked Jim, which member of the Poirier was the best player?  He simply replied “The one that wins the next championship with me is the best”
